S.S. Beatrice

S.S. Beatrice

The S.S. Beatrice boasts yacht-style light wood with blue and white finishes throughout, a renovated lobby featuring elegant mirrors, marble floors, a white Murano chandelier with blue shades, and a grand staircase made of nickel and black iron—such eye-catching entrances are a signature design element of Uniworld’s Super ShipTM fleet. The ship’s redesigned lounge features sofas and chairs with hand-made upholstery, a parquet floor and upholstered ceiling panels, solar shades, and new USB ports allowing guests to charge anywhere they are sitting. The artwork throughout the ship includes pieces from Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Pino Signoretto.

S.S. Beatrice offers four dining options all inspired by famous Austrian composers, including Mozart’s, the ship’s main restaurant; Wolfgang’s bar and lounge, and newly added Schubert’s and Max’s. For guests seeking an immersive culinary experience, Max’s restaurant offers intimate cooking classes where guests can create local European cuisines alongside the chef. Schubert’s, an 18-seat café located at the bow of the ship, offers guests shared plates from lunch through dinnertime. The cozy Austrian-styled eatery features menus reflecting the cuisine of the ship’s destinations.

Ship Reviews

This was our second Uniworld cruise, and we truly enjoyed it. The service was outstanding. The cruise director Milcho was very approachable and professional and did a great job in organizing all the tours and the activities. The ship could not sail beyond Passau due to low water levels, and they managed to replace Nurnberg with Salzburg, which was amazing. Guides were between very good and excellent in most ports, and the guides in Vienna and Prague were especially good, among the best we had ever. Rooms are small (150 sqft), but very well appointed. I would probably prefer sailing on one of their newer ships that have larger rooms (around 175 sqft), but we spend very little time in the cabin, so wasn't a big deal. We would like to see more on board activities and entertainment, especially guest entertainers, but I understand that river cruises cannot compete with Ocean cruises in terms of entertainment and activities. Still, they could probably bring more guest entertainers. The only negative was the food, which was very inconsistent and not as good as our first Uniworld cruise 2 years ago. In the first 3-4 days the dinner was very mediocre. It improved in the last few days, but overall we expected more from Uniworld, and this is the main reason I give it 4 stars overall. It looked like the chef had a very good understanding of some dishes but no clue about others. Overall we can definitely recommend Uniworld and hope to sail with them again (probably on one of the newer ships), but the food was a big drawdown for us.

Highly recommended! First time on river cruise. Went with my wife. I ordered through Costco because I trust that they have done due diligence. (also got a $500 costco card and $50 on board credit per person). We are in our mid 50s. The average age and mode (for you statisticians) appeared to be mid to late 60s. So were were younger than most of the other travelers. That was okay because most were quite pleasant, easy to talk to. All loved travel and seemed adventurous. The best part for me was the service. Staff tended to be eastern European. I was amazed daily how hard the staff worked to make our time on the SS Beatrice something special. A big thank you to them. The dining was great! Most of the dinners were sit down with table service. The breakfast and lunch were buffet with lots of offerings including an omelette bar (no wait!). Far better quality food than on a previous ocean cruise. The alcohol was of good quality(e.g. Titos for my martini). There was even a sommelier on board who provided us with a different white and red wine every night. I am not a wine connoisseur but my wife is and she liked the wines. Rooms. We got the French balcony which is the most common room. Has a large sliding window but no actual walk out balcony. That was fine: we pretty much only slept in there. Bed was queen size, quite comfortable. I'd avoid the "classic" room which only saves a couple hundred bucks per person and is in the lower level. I understand that it is as water level with only a small window. Bathroom is on the small size as one might expect given that this is a river boat. A large person would have a hard time maneuvering on the throne. I'm 5'10", 185 lbs and felt like it would be difficult if I were much larger. A previous poster compared the size to a plane bathroom but that's .an unfair exaggeration. The excursions were great. They typically offered 2-3 per day, most of them included in the cost. Another poster complained that a couple excursions, such as a private music performance near Vienna, were extra but that's being nit picky because it was something special. Of note, we only did a couple of the excursions, preferring to go out into the towns on our own. This was greatly aided by bringing along lonely planet book on Germany. Fitness room. Small, had a rowing machine, stationary bike, stair master, treadmill. Some weights/bands, yoga mats, towels/water. I used a few times but also went for jog at various stops. We used their bikes to pedal around Regensburg and it was perfect. I think that Uniworld gets the right balance of quality and cost. I would definitely go with them again.

We were suppose to start our 3 week B/B cruise from Bucharest to Amsterdam on the "Beatrice" (capacity 148) but due to flooding on the Danube we started on the "Duchess" (capacity 130). The Beatrice was waiting for us when we arrived in Budapest, where we changed boats. The transition was handled smoothly by the Staff while the guests were on tour and everyone had their proper cabin for the remainder of the cruise. It wasn't an ideal start to our cruise, but Captain Michael and the Duchess Crew were fantastic and did everything they could to make sure everyone was comfortable and happy. In the background, Uniworld made acct adjustment for guest the inconvenience, what more can you ask for. As usual with Uniworld every meal was delicious, perfectly paired with regional wines and the service "OMG" incomparable. Unexpected travel bumps happen, but Uniworld continued to focus on quality guest experience.

Hungary

The Jewel of the Danube River

To see Hungary once is to be enthralled for life. If you’re visiting for the first time, you can’t miss Budapest, unarguably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Bisected by a wide stretch of the Danube River, Budapest is known for its grand architecture and eclectic culture. If you have more time, venture further into Hungary for a taste of the country’s rich heritage. With Uniworld, you may find yourself sampling wines in Etyek, shopping in the Szentendre artisans’ village, or witnessing a Puszta horse show in Lajosmizse.

Landmarks
Hungary, and Budapest in particular, is home to a stunning collection of Neo-Renaissance buildings. Many of these are among the country’s top sites to see, such as the grand Andrassy Avenue and one of the most iconic buildings in Europe, the Hungarian Parliament Building. There are many other famous sites to discover around Budapest, from the Castle District to the thermal baths. It’s enough to keep anyone returning to the city time and time again, with something new to see with each visit.

Cuisine
The land that makes up modern-day Hungary was historically traversed by a wide variety of nomadic groups, and the country’s cuisine reflects that. The fare is hearty, dominated by meat and dairy products—perfect for cold winters. Bright-red paprika, ranging from sweet to spicy, is liberally used in many of Hungary’s most popular dishes. When visiting Budapest, make sure to explore one of the city’s many famous market halls, where you’ll find sausages, fried lángos bread with various toppings, and a multitude of other beloved local treats.

Wines
Though largely unrecognized in the international market, Hungarian wines used to be celebrated in Europe for their quality. The Sun King of France, Louis XIV, even dubbed Hungarian wine the “Wine of Kings, King of Wines.” The industry was nearly obliterated in the 19th and 20th centuries due to phylloxera blight and Communist Era policies. A modern-day resurgence is bringing them back though. Today the most famous Hungarian wines are sweet Tokaj wines and rich red Bikavér, which translates to “Bull’s Blood.”

Music
Age-old traditions continue to thrive in Hungary, including several styles of local folk music and dance. The country also has a strong love for classical music. Famous composers from Béla Bartók to Franz Liszt made their homes here, and the latter founded the renowned Franz Liszt Academy of Music, which continues to train talented musicians to this day.
