Ship Reviews

Overview If you are under 65 (likely under 70), this cruise may not be the best fit for you. My wife and I did enjoy our holiday, but it’s important to acknowledge that it's generally hard not to have a good time on any cruise, especially one offering excellent food, all-inclusive drinks, and included excursions. However, when considering the cost and expectations of Silversea, our conclusion is clear: this was not the 6* luxury, personalized trip we anticipated. Suite Accommodation The suites themselves were impressive and spacious. We stayed in a veranda suite, which included a walk-in wardrobe—providing plenty of space. While we did need to request additional hangers, the bedding, towels, and toiletries provided were of excellent quality and comfort. The shower water pressure was the best we have experienced on any ship and being able to have a luxurious bath after a day out was a real treat. Dining and Entertainment The onboard food was consistently excellent, well prepared, and offered a variety of choices. Entertainment also met a high standard. Daily trivia sessions were enjoyable and well hosted by the Cruise Director. Evening shows in the theatre or on deck were of great quality, with talented singers and musicians. However, the event programming sometimes missed the mark. For example, the deck party featured a lengthy 1-hour and 20-minute performance that left the singers visibly exhausted. Another evening included many contemporary songs by artists like Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift—choices that we enjoyed but did not resonate with the older average age of the audience. Service and Arrival Experience Service was the main area where our experience did not live up to the luxury reputation that Silversea promotes. Before the cruise, we stayed in a lovely hotel with a Silversea representative on-site. We were told to leave our luggage outside our room so it could be sent directly to the ship, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, things began to unravel the next day. We were instructed to meet for our coach at 12:00 PM, only to find the hotel lobby overcrowded due to delayed buses, which had been scheduled too closely together. We waited over 45 minutes with no communication from the Silversea representatives present. Added to this, we were told, while on the bus before leaving for the port, that someone would be waiting to take any extra bags we had onboard for us. When we arrived at the port this did not happen, and we had our expectations dashed again. When we finally entered our suite, our luggage was waiting, and we began to unpack. However, unlike our previous cruise experiences, we did not see our butler or cabin steward within the first hour of being onboard. I had to call to request someone to visit our suite so we could address a few needs. This lack of immediate attention did not feel personal or luxurious. Recurring Issues During the Cruise - Coffee and Tea Quality: The coffee and tea were disappointing, possibly due to the use of cheap long-life milk. I frequently had to request milk and sugar for my tea, which should be automatic, especially after the first request. - Limited Daytime Activities: There were few activities available during the day until around 4 PM, even on sea days. - Included Tours: Excursions were often stressful, with large groups (about 30 people per bus) and frequent delays caused by waiting for other tour groups or slow passengers. - Lack of Recognition: Even by the last day, we still had to remind the Maître D and waiters of our suite number. With only about 350 guests onboard—and very few under 65—it should have been easy for staff to remember us. - Meal Service: At least once per day at mealtimes, we had to ask for our water to be refilled. On other cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, this is done automatically and promptly. - Poolside Drink Service: Drink service around the pool was slow, with staff often standing around without attending to guests. - There were some standout crew members (Kimberley and Ryan in the Bars) but the service from the rest was no higher than on most other cruises. While it may seem that the issues described are minor inconveniences or ‘First World’ problems, it is important to recognise the significance of such details when considering the cost and promise of a luxury cruise. When guests invest a substantial amount in what is expected to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the expectation naturally rises. Small oversights and lapses in service can – in aggregate - have a notable impact on the overall enjoyment and sense of value received. In this context, attention to detail and consistency in service are not merely niceties—they are fundamental elements that shape the guest experience and should be delivered as part of the luxury standard.

As experienced Regent cruisers, this was our first cruise with Silversea, and having read all the negative reviews on the Silver Whisper on this website, we were a bit nervous. But we were very pleasantly surprised. The ship was in mint condition. Our suite was spacious enough, the bed was very comfortable, and we really liked the double sink in the bathroom. The staff was exceptionally nice, friendly, helpful and professional, and the officers were very personable, open and always around. We had the opportunity to attend 2 behind-the-scenes-tours (galley and bridge) and 2 Q&A sessions which were a real treat. We were also impressed with the perfect organization of the on- and off-boarding process and the tours. The dispatch of the tours was exceptionally smooth. The only mild disappointment was regarding food and wine which were fine but not exceptional and below our (maybe unrealistic) expectations, given Silversea's reputation

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience. Lovely accommodation, comfortable public areas (never overcrowded), very good food and service throughout--and a good selection of tours to choose from. I'd certainly recommend Silversea and the Silver Whisper. There were just a few things which struck me as strange. The butlers and their deputies were great, but have to dress in ridiculous heavy suits with tails--crazy in the very hot weather experienced on the cruise. Another very odd aspect of the uniform policy is that the ship's officers do not wear "whites" in such weather, and look out of place in their "Blues". And on the subject of officers, I realise this is company policy, but it is rather sad that they are virtually invisible and , (with the exception the oddly titled Hotel Director and Guest Relations Manager) have minimal interaction with passengers. The Captain was also a notable exception and would often mingle with guests and chat with them. Full marks to him. Finally , a couple of minor irritations--the pool area is comfortable but the taped music is a bit too loud and intrusive for my taste; and for some odd reason outside the panoramic lounge on the stern there is a tape of a cricket. Presumably this is to create an exotic or tropical mood--but it seems unnecessary and just odd to me.

Silver Whisper has been refurbished. Very welcome. Comfortable chairs everywhere, pleasant colour scheme. The air conditioning was not perfect but was fine. The main issue last trip, not being able to get food easily at odd hours of the day, has been solved with the installation of the Atrium café. Those banana and chocolate skewers are not to be missed. Downsides: the washers and driers have been replaced by Miele machines which don't do what you tell them and don't dry the clothes. Annoying. Also, our shower seemed to be linked to others: sudden extreme temperature and pressure changes are dangerous, and this must be fixed. The water policy would be fine except that the refillable bottle they supply is too big to carry comfortably in a handbag. Offer different sizes for different trips? Staff are still wonderful. Our butler Laxman and our stateroom attendant Bagus were friendly and efficient and sometimes especially thoughtful. Ioannis was fabulous in finding me wines that weren't chardonnay or merlot. Food was very good, though I'm vegetarian, so my protein mostly consisted of eggs and dairy. The spinach and artichoke souffle and the eggplant parmigiana are standouts, as is the soup, the pasta and – joy of joys – the coffee ice cream. I notice some cutbacks – perhaps to pay for the caviar, which I don't eat. V8, for instance is still listed on the breakfast menu but is always replaced by tomato juice. We ate once in La Dame. The food was good, but we were very uncomfortable with the closeness of other tables. We were assured that they didn't fill every table, but that was not what we found. Lunch on the deck was always very pleasant. Gripe: why do all the women servers have to wear skirts? I assume they must, because why would they, otherwise? Let them wear stylish trouser outfits like the men. We cruised around Spain and really enjoyed the ports, especially Valencia, Seville and of course Motril (for the Alhambra). Maps before we arrive in port would be useful, as would some port talks that told us where to go and what to see rather than focusing on St Augustine and the Trinity. Chocolate and boogie night on the pool deck was a highlight. Cocktails in the Panorama Lounge always a lovely experience, and not too crowded. Portuguese lesson came in handy. All in all, a lovely cruise.
