Ship Reviews

I was looking for a Mediterranean cruise with a lot of port stops and this fit the bill. I had a fabulous time visiting Mykonos, Istanbul, Kusadasi/Ephesus and Santorini. This was my 60th birthday cruise and I planned well in advance for it. We arrived in Athens a couple of days early so we could take in the sites before heading to the port. Embarkation could have gone better. It was extremely crowded and they weren't letting people on the ship. We didn't get there early. I deliberately picked a 1PM embarkation time to avoid the early crush and so I could have a leisurely morning in Athens. I think the delay was due to the norovirus protocols. They truly disinfected the entire ship. The books were removed from the library and for the first 3 days or so you couldn't serve yourself in Cafe Promenade or the Windjammer. Voyager is an older ship at this point and it shows in some ways. Just after we checked in we had a maintenance worker show up to repair a leak in the sink. It must have been reported by the previous occupant or the stateroom attendant. Glad they fixed it. We received a notice that they would be doing "Balcony maintenance." A couple of guys showed up to touch up paint on the balcony and the wet paint sign stayed up the entire week. The cabin felt small. We had 7th floor balcony and while it was enough room for the two of us, it felt cramped. The older ships don't have electricity near the beds/end tables so you have to plug in at the desk. Our cabin attendant, Keith, was fantastic. Fun, personable and he made great towel animals. Our room was spotless. Food, and the entire dining room experience, was a bit of a disappointment. We had My Time dining with 7:15 reservations, but there were nights when we arrived and found that our table had been given away and we were seated in another section. It was annoying because our waiter, Swapnil, had documented my crustacean allergy and had me pre-order the night before. Not sure how, when the my time dining opened at 7:15, they gave away our table. I've been cruising since 2014 and I can honestly say that both service and food quality have continued to decline. There was definitely feeling that the staff were stretched thin and pressed for time. On our last night Swapnil had been replaced and the new person argued with me about the crustacean allergy, insisting it meant all shellfish (it doesn't) and he spilled some lamb gravy on me when reaching across to grab my plate. I always buy the coffee card for my lattes and such at Cafe Promenade, and this time I found the coffees to be very weak. I stopped ordering halfway through the week and just drank the regular, free Lavazza coffee. The Cafe Promenade staff were delightful and very efficient. I'm not sure what happened to the coffees, but it wasn't a big deal. One thing I really appreciated on this sailing was the entertianment. The Latin band, Son Del Rio, were fantastic! I couldn't help but dance. The magician was very good (I forgot his name, sorry) and we enjoyed the Music in Pictures review. We used the gym when we could. We worked out quite a few times. For a smaller ship they had a well-appointed gym with treadmills, ellipticals and resistance machines. We also took the morning stretch yoga class which was great. The best part of this vacation was the visits to the ports. Mykonos: We walked around on our own. It was incredibly crowded, despite the rain, because there were 5 ships there that day. It was great to see and I would like to see more of the Island, but I would avoid the port area on days when that many ships are in town. Sightseeing there was easy. Istanbul: Istanbul was incredible. A Turkish friend told us to try a restaurant his family loves. We decided to scope it out early just to see where we were going. It was about 20-25 minutes from the ship but all uphill, haha. Once we were up there we walked around and visited different stores, shops and we pet a LOT of cats. Then we backtracked to the restaurant, Demeti, which was absolutely wonderful. We ordered a lot of our friend's recommendations. I'm glad we had reservations because we had a lovely balcony view of the Bosphorus. At one point a beautiful cat came up on the balcony and settled into my lap and went to sleep. Day 2 in Istanbul it rained. We had an early appointment for a tour of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, and the Spice Market. That was a great half day tour and then we decided to walk back to the ship, which took about 45 minutes through some fun neighborhoods. Kusadasi/Ephesus: We were up and out early. We had booked a private tour to see Mary's House, the Ancient City, the Museum, and the Temple of Artemis. When the tour ended we walked around Kusadasi and enjoyed the day out. Santorini: We bought the Fira transfer tickets so we were on the first tender and then the bus. We then proceeded to walk the Caldera to Oia. It was tiring but a great experience. The views were unparalled. I am extremely happy that we were both able to do the hike. We had lunch in Oia at Mezzo and then took the local bus back to Fira. Getting a tender back to the ship took forever because another ship had come in and they were using the tenders for that ship. Our sea day was my birthday. It was also "Dress Your Best" night and we went all out. I made an appointment to get my hair done and the stylist did an excellent job. I never get my hair styled, but that night my updo looked great. One thing I noticed about this cruise was that the majority of people didn't participate in the theme nights. 70s, 80s, white night, Halloween costume and Dress your Best. I think people do it more on the US cruises. We did have dinner at Giovanni's Table on that sea day. The food there was definitely better, as was the service. It wasn't overly busy in there but I'm glad we made that reservation. I especially enjoyed the branzino. Debark went smoothly. We had no trouble finding our luggage and leaving.
