Ship Reviews

My wife and I, along with our three kids(15,12,4) embarked on this journey with three other family members. We chose this ship because of the price and our previous experience with Royal Caribbean. We embarked in Vancouver, which took a little longer than typical embarkations for Caribbean or Bahamas cruises. There were a total of three ships in port that day, so it took us about an hour to go from the curb to the ship. Overall, the process was easy, and the port had tons of employees to assist with making sure you knew where to go and guiding you in the right direction. Room: We booked a balcony room, which overall was pretty basic. I think a balcony room is a must for Alaska, and there was nothing better than waking up each morning and enjoying coffee on your deck. This is an older ship, so the room/bathroom was beginning to show its age. It was well taken care of and our cabin steward was great with keeping everything refreshed and organized. Dining: We had no major issues with the food or the service. At times, like any buffet, I get a little tired of the same things for breakfast and lunch. The MDR was good and service was awesome as always. I ventured out and tried a handful of Indian dishes this trip, and was happily surprised. Our waitress, who was from India, took note of my selections. By the fourth night, she was bringing extra dishes/desserts to try that weren't on the menu. She explained that a lot of the crew, especially the chefs, were from India. Most of the extra dishes came from the employee dining area. Our only issue with dining was the initial night. We had a group of eight, and linked all of our reservations in order to sit together for my time dining. When we got our room keys, it had us all at early dining (445pm). I just assumed that they had to have a time down on your card. We arrived at 630pm, which was when anytime dining started, and were told that with a party our size, we would not be able to eat together until 900pm, or we could stick with the 445pm. I patiently went to guest services and was able to get them to remedy the issue, but they had to reprint everyone's room keys. Entertainment: The talent (singers, dancers) were great! The shows were a little boring, but it was obvious they were talented. Being a smaller ship, we had a smaller orchestra. The orchestra was phenomenal! There was one comedian/magician that was good. The others were okay. We did silent disco a few times and of course "The Quest" on the last night. Kids Activities: Going into this trip, I knew this was a smaller ship, and probably wouldn't have a ton of kids. They advertised the water slide, rock climbing wall, etc. being open with published hours, but every time we would go, it was, "closed due to weather". This included days in port with sunshine and no rain. They did allow children to use the Solarium Pool from 10am-12pm & 12pm-2pm each day, which I thought was nice. We were busy most days with ports, so this wasn't too much of an issue. Ports: Sitka - We booked an excursion not through the ship. It was an amazing wildlife/whale watching tour for 2.5 hours. Sitka itself was pretty, but we were in port with another large R.C. ship. At times the port felt crowded. My guess is that they don't have many days with more than one ship. Juneau - After sailing the Dawes Glacier in the morning, we arrived in Juneau at 2:00pm. Due to being the last ship of the day to arrive, we were docked at one of the slips not directly in downtown. While it wasn't super far, we had to wait for a bus to shuttle us from the dock to downtown. We rented a van and drove to Mendenhall Glacier. The national park was packed and crowded. Views were great and Nugget Falls were gorgeous. We ate dinner at the other Tracy's Crab Shack, which is about a mile outside downtown. It was much more quiet and comfortable of a location. Ketchikan - This was another port where we didn't arrive until later in the day. (3pm) We spent the day walking downtown and Creek Street. This was our only rainy day, so it was kind of cool to actually have a realistic Alaskan day. Prince Rupert- I wasn't expecting much from this port, and the excursion options were limited. We got off the ship and explored the smaller downtown. There were some decent shops, coffee places, bakeries, etc. There was also a city park with a nice playground right outside the terminal, which was great for our little one to burn some energy. I could see this port becoming bigger and more popular. Overall, I enjoy this ship and its ports. I do wish we had gotten to the ports earlier in the day. I believe due to the number of ships in Alaska now, they are having to break them up on how many can be in port each day. We found that a lot of places closed at 5 or 6pm. Being in port from 2p-10p, this made it at times challenging when shopping or looking for somewhere to eat dinner off the ship.

This was NOT southern Caribbean cruise (as shown on auto entry with sail date), it was Panama Canal from Colon Panama, through canal, ending in LA (San Pedro). It was a 10-night cruise. Ports were Costa Rica and two in Mexico. The ship is "tired", but public spaces are very nice, well furnished and maintained. Cabin needs updating. We like the smaller ships. Crew was fantastic - friendly and eager to serve. Entertainment was beyond great with three production shows and other great talent. The CD not our favorite as he seemed like he'd be more suited to a party boat, but we didnt have much interaction with him. His staff was great. Only issue was boarding. The crowd stormed the gates as soon as priority boarding was announced. Agents couldn't control these rude people. Complete disregard for boarding times. People with mobility issues just had to wait. Disembarking similar.

We sailed as 2 families both with kids between 8 and 11. This was our 3rd Royal Caribbean sailing. We were nervous of the older and smaller boat with less kids activities but quickly found that we liked the size of the ship and in turn gave our kids a lot more freedom which they enjoyed. The main dining room food was top notch and we found the service to be exceptional everywhere throughout the ship. The ship was clean and still modern despite her age. We didn't bother with the drink package and instead enjoyed the drink specials and buckets of beer. It added up, but was less than the package would have been. Our ports of call were also great so we were really happy with the itinerary. Our complaints would be minor. There wasn't a show every evening. We would have liked a better scheduled silent dance party which our kids really enjoy. We also enjoyed the non US home port. We would like to see more non US options! Very Latin American based crowd. Language was a bit of a barrier but we learned into it and had a blast!
