Booked the 7 night Norway cruise from Southampton as the wife did not want to fly far this year and this was the longest cruise Royal were doing as there was no 12 night Canneries cruise year. Booked room specifically because it is a promenade view room above the R bar which means we only have 1 flight of stairs to climb back to our cabin at the end of the night. It is also centrally based so if the seas get rough, then minimum roll is suffered. It is also slightly larger than the GTY cabins you get down on decks 2 and 3 and was in good condition for its age. Not many sockets, so be advised to bring US adaptors. Other than unplugging the kettle, you get just 2 sockets. Also we always have a room near the aft stairwell/lifts as this is ideal during busy times as it is only 3 flights down to the dinning room and 1 flight down to the promenade. Also, you have a good view of Guest services from the window, so if you need them, then you can watch and wait until the queues die down. Our room attendant came along at night to clean our room whilst we were at dinner. Only gripe (and its minor) is that it took 3 attempts to get our robes for the pool and also 3 attempts to get the wash and fold forms plus our bottle of wine for being D+ We had My Time dinning in the MDR on deck 3 every night. The food was excellent for what you get. However, as the meals are now based on theme nights such as French, Italian, etc, there were a couple of nights where we both had the New Your Strip steak which was lovely. No more free lobster tails, but there was the braised lamb on the last night, but it seems to have shrunk in recent years. Luckily, plenty of food around the ship during the day. So like the Indy has a Fish and Chip shop up on deck 11, the Liberty has a Mexican/Nacho type place which is excellent if you just want a light lunch and is included. There was the usual coffee shop for a brew and cake on the promenade deck and also a Sorentos pizza for that midnight feast! We had a few lunches also in the Windjammer which had a reasonable selection of meats/fish/chips/burgers and puddings - and yes some people still pile their pudding on the same plate as their mains! Went down to the main dinning room on the 2 sea days for brunch. Did not bother with the A La carte as the queue went right back, so just did our own thing at the buffet and had a nice english fry-up! There were a few families on the ship of all nationalities and the kids behaved pretty well compared to some of the cruises and it looks like there was plenty things around the ship to keep them entertained. Talking of entertainment, Mark Rous should have been cruise director, but has injured his knee, so instead we had the wonderful Clo O'Connor who after all these years was excellent in every event we saw her in and was very approachable and a good laugh - something that is sadly missing these days! The main show was Saturday Night Fever the musical which was 90 minutes and very good and featured a few songs not from the film, so was different from what I was expecting - but excellent none the the less. There was also a comedian who was very good and female singer/pianist who was very good a belting out the Liberace tunes! Oh, Boarding was odd, I went on the app the moment you could select time and 1200 was the earliest. However, our hotel at Southampton was only 500 yards away and a 10 minute walk (or £20 in a taxi if you can't walk or want to pay a lot for a 2 minute drive), so we left the hotel at checkout time which was 11am and was at the terminal for 1115 and dropped off the cases and went into the terminal and was on board within 10 minutes. I say odd, because last year the staff were turning away anyone who arrived early and this year they couldn't wait to get you on the ship. For disembarkation, we take our own luggage off and we are not in a rush as we always book a 1030ish train to London, so we can get up and go to breakfast then get ready and go and sit in a designated bar/lounge until around 9am allowing everyone else to clear the ship and terminal and then have a very slow walk to the train station which with cases can take between 30 to 45 minutes - but if you want a taxi then fine, but you may be waiting longer than what it takes to walk - unless you sadly can't. As for the ports of call. 2nd day of cruise we docked in Zeebrugge. In the past we did a trip via the cruise line to Brugge but the price for that trip has more than doubled. So, there is a tram that runs along the coast for a few euro's or you can walk approx 2 miles to Zeebruge Strand station (which takes about 45 minutes following the tram lines )where the train costs 4 euros per person each was and takes 15 minutes. Brugge is a very nice city, but is also very busy, so we did not bother with the canal boat ride this time and just had a good walk around the street and had a nice hot chocolate drink and some chocolates in one of the many tea rooms before heading back to the ship. After a day at sea we arrived in Haungesand (which I think was change of port from Molden). Anyway the wife said she had been told about some concrete horses in sea around the bay so wanted to go and see them. We got a map of the area from the stand at the port and had to climb over a bridge to get to the mainland (this bridge is best described as similar to the one in Barcelona's port), and then its about a 3 mile hike on the flat either by the coastal path or main roads which also take you to a nice monument. If you make it there then you are 2/3rds of the way there. The horses are there just past a lighthouse, but don't go to the lighthouse as that a different path, so you need to follow the signs. Upon returning to the monument we found a road-train had pulled up. Didn't see this earlier but we asked the driver if we could pay for a trip back to the port and he said it would be 10 euros each - sounds a lot, well it looks like the round trip was 70 euros so not bad. So if you want to see these horses and can walk then it takes about an hour from the ship, and if you're lucky on the way back then you may be able to get a cheap seat on the train depending on capacity - which by the way does a nice tour the town on the way back plus goes over that bridge and drops you right outside the cruise terminal. Next port was Olden which was the only port actually in a Fjord. Again we just got off the ship for a walk around. The place was very clean and tidy with lovely views, but not a lot to actually do. The best part was the sail away which lasted about 4 hours from leaving to reaching the North Sea. Last port was Stavanger - we had heard about the big Rock but my wife knew she could not do it so we just had a nice walk around the city for a few hours. At the end of the day we just wanted a relaxing cruise as coming down from Nottingham, we had actually had 5 days on the Isle of Wight going made doing everything the isle had to offer before returning to Southampton for this cruise turning a 7 night cruise into a 14 holiday, so not having to rush around onboard was perfect. BTW I actually managed to do the green and orange waterslides for the first time as last year on the Indy there were so many kids, it was almost impossible to get a go. Didn't do the Perfect Storm as you need 2 people and my wife is unable to take part and no-one else wanted to do it. Did have several games of Mini Golf upon deck 13 at the front. Sadly for some reason there seems to be more small clubs than long so had to wait a few times for families to finish first. Yes the wife beat me again! In all the cruise was excellent, the room was good and the food was good too. Did not bother with any speciality restaurants as we have done them all before and since the wife had had multiple operations she has to be careful what she eats and the MDR has enough choice for her, so thanks again to Royal for that! We had many drinks (we get 5 free drinks a day as D+) so had our usually Kraken Calada's poolside around 3pm then a cocktail/drink of the day with dinner at 7pm and then a drink during a show later and then 2 drinks at the end of the night in the R Bar. I saw no real bad behaviour unlike a few recent cruises, which was good especially since the football was being shown in the theatre and the hoof and claw pub. All in all, the cruise was a good one, the ship was showing its age in some places, but still better than some that are that old. The dinning staff and bar staff were all very polite and nice, the entertainment staff were also very good at the events they did. It is just a shame Royal are not doing the 12 or 14 night cruises as 7 days can sometimes just fly by too quickly.
