The Ship: 4100 passengers, 16 decks, about 12 years old. 2 elevators, one group at front and one at the rear. Ship was well maintained and kept clean, modern looking and very nice to experience. Signage was in English and Chinese having been used in the Asian market. We had 1 port stop in Kona then we had 6 sea days in a row prior to docking at Vancouver on the last day. We felt there were too many passengers for the available public areas and dining. This was noticeable with consecutive days and no port stops. Early on when the temps were mild the outdoor pool areas were packed, no available deck chairs, people everywhere. Also very apparent in the windjammer on deck 14 rear, many times difficult to find an open table, very crowded around the food stations. Also evident while waiting for elevators. In the evening theatre too little available open seating for the popular shows, arrive early or no seat. Too much emphasis on maximizing space as a revenue generator yielding a shortage of public areas. No atrium on this ship which we liked. DINING - our group of 6 had the assigned 5pm time in the Grande room on deck 3, table 314 near the entrance. Our waiters Tirso and assistant waiter were excellent. Frequently the entry doors opened before 5pm and with their excellent service our dining was completed by 630pm or earlier without rushing. Having the same waiters and table each night allowed us to dine knowing what to expect from them and they knew what we needed and they met our every dining need. It worked well on this sailing. Menu options were satisfactory with enough variation for most any appetite choice. Generally the meals were very good, at times options and quality could have been better. Overall a good experience with very good consistent service. By finishing at 630pm this allowed us access to most all of the evening shows and activities each night without rushing. The windjammer was it's usual - a lot of variety - generally good quality, biggest issue is too many people for a dine area of this size, frequently a very crowded feeling in here. NOTE: DINING THOUGHT - consider the Solarium Bistro on deck 14 front - especially for breakfast, opens at 7am, like the Windjammer and offers a decent selection with few people present as it is a 18+ venue. Also I understand this was a great idea for the initial feed upon the boarding date to avoid the chaos and crowds of the WJ; where everyone goes immediately as they get on board. SPECIALITY DINING - we did Chops steakhouse and Jaimies Italian for lunches on day 5 for Chops and Day 8 for Jaime's. Chops was excellent for service and food prep and quality in a pleasant and upscale dining room. Jaime's setting overlooked the tender storage area but the food options and quality were excellent as was the service. RCL had a great sale on these lunch dine options making this option comparable to a restaurant meal cost, too good to pass up and it broke up all the consecutive sea days. STATEROOM: Had an interior on Deck 7 forward - nice bathroom, nicely decorated and modern looking, large bathroom with more storage than we required. However this was probably the smallest interior cabin we have ever had. Probably just over 100 SF. Room was comfortable, about 12" on either side of the bed for getting in and out so a little too tight. Was usually quiet and temperature was adjustable and good. All the way in the front required some walking back to the dine areas, usually at the rear of the ship so not the best location on a large ship. We did experience some night time noise coming from the theatre 2 floors below us - better soundproofing needed? Between the noise issues and the room size probably one of the worst interior cabins we've ever had. CREW: Saw the senior officers seldom, did bump into our Captain once in the WJ dine area. Overall a low profile for most of them. EMBARKING AND DISEMBARKING: In Honolulu from the time we got out of the UBER until we were on the ship was less than 30 minutes. Access to the room was about 2pm. Bags delivered ok, WJ dine at 2pm upon entering was a madhouse though, no available tables, people everywhere. I suggest an option like the solarium bistro on deck 14 upon entry vs. the WJ. I understand it was quiet and pleasant. We did do all the required pre check in things so this did speed up our boarding. In Vancouver we were in the 1st group after the walk offs at 945am after docking at 830am on Tuesday. However we did not leave the ship until 1015am, 30 minutes late. Quickly through the port building and to a cab for the airport ride for $42 CDN and 30 minutes to do. Cabs were available and handy right at the terminal building exit door. RCL CROWN & ANCHOR: Their loyalty program is good for us. We are Diamond level and this comes with 4 drinks each at most any of their bars each 24 hour period. No need for us to even consider a drink package with 4 drinks daily at any time. Also we are provided with 24 hours each of free internet. Access to the crown lounge is also nice for Diamond and above. DAILY SHOWS AND ACTIVITIES: This continues to be an area that seems to have suffered since covid. We always do the trivia sessions but the small venue music options seem few, the arts & craft options were minimal. The evening shows were primarily RCL production shows with their singers and dancers and we did have 1 night of a juggler. There were a few too many times when it seemed to be a dearth of things to do during all those sea days - at least things our group was interested in doing. There was no evening show WOW this cruise for us. Seems like the budget ax has taken its toll. CASINO: This ship had a large one on deck 3, narrow but very long and we saw many winners so that was good. There was a small section that was smoking but the majority of it was non smoking so that was great. Good variety of slots and tables with varying denominations to play. 252 total slot machines. NICE TOUCH: RCL continues to put the day of the week in each floor of every elevator. At each elevator station there is an interactive sign full of information to include: day, date, current temp, sunrise & sunset time. Also a diagram of each venue of that floor, your present location (as a red dot) and which direction you may need to go. Excellent signage. SUMMARY: Beautiful ship and great time with close friends. Great value for the money spent as an 8 day vacation. Again too many people for the available public areas and activities providing a crowded feeling too frequently. Entertainment and activities deficient, noticeable on this sailing with all the consecutive port days. Will be hesitant to book at GTY cabin again after the disappointment of this interior.
7 night to Alaska, round trip out of Seattle. Embarkation: Arrived to the port about 11:30. Parked at the parking lot and hopped on the shuttle over to the terminal. There were lines through the whole process, but they kept moving the whole time. The staff at the port was helpful at keeping the line moving. Cell service and internet in the port building is not good, so make sure you have downloaded cruise docs if not printing them out. Service: Very friendly stateroom attendant and main dining room waiters. Most encounters with staff out and about on the ship, were friendly, offering a hello and smile. Activities: iFly was down for the whole trip, but everything else seemed to be up and running. Easy to get a free slot on the North Star while in port in Sitka. My kids had no problem getting in multiple runs on the Flowrider and bumper cars. The outdoor pool was closed most of the trip, open just the first day and last day due to weather, but the indoor pool remained open almost the whole time (it did have to get drained and cleaned at one point) and never was too full. Lots of other activities like trivia and game shows throughout the days. Entertainment/Shows: Only caught two shows, the headliner, who was a comedian juggler. He was entertaining and family friendly. The other show I saw was in the Royal Theater, the one with the big earth harp thing. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea; not really sure what I was watching, and glad it didn't go on much longer. My mother-in-law who was travelling with us, thought it was great, so to each their own. Dining: Ate most meals in the Main Dining Room. Dinner service was great and didn't take too long. Waiters learned our preferences very quickly. Food was average for Royal Caribbean. Not the best thing I've ever put in my mouth, but didn't spit anything out either. All the food was good temp. Breakfast/brunch was so slow. The dining rooms never felt that busy, so not sure why those meals took so long. The Solarium Bistro was closed the whole time due to a gluten free group renting out the venue. Only went to the Windjammer buffet twice, day 2 breakfast was crazy busy and difficult to find a table. Also went for dinner while we were in Juneau. Arrived right as they opened and was much more enjoyable. Food was .... fine, but I'm also not much of a buffet kind of person. Victoria has some weird law where the ship can only have up to one bar open per deck while in port, and it actually starts about an hour before arriving in port. The pool deck was reduced to just the North Star bar, which instantly became slammed when all the other pool bars closed. Stateroom: Very clean, decent size, plenty of plugs for us. We had connecting balcony cabins, and opened both the connecting door inside, as well as the door between the balconies. It was nice, until we hit bumpy seas and wind, as the balcony door does not latch, so it banged around. Disembarkation: Left our staterooms about 7:30 and went to 270 to get breakfast and wait for our time to depart. The process seemed very organized. When our number was called, we got in the long line that snaked the outside deck and into the terminal. The line was long and moved quite slow. It was easy to find our bags in the terminal, but then we had to get in the line for passport control, where agents looked at every single passport; no facial recognition where you get to just walk through. Once out of the terminal, we got in the line for the shuttle to the parking lot, and with only two shuttles running, it was a long wait. Ports: Ketchikan and Juneau, the ship docks right in town. You are just steps from shops and restaurants as soon as you get off the ship. Sitka is further away and requires a free shuttle. Book free reservations online and avoid the long standby lines. Didn't get off the ship in Victoria because we were there for only a few hours at dinner time.
Background: we are mid-40s couple that sail loyal to Royal. This was our 13th cruise with Royal. We enjoy the diamond perks (especially the drink vouchers). This was our 2nd Alaska Cruise leaving May 19 from Seattle to Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, and Victoria The Ship: We had previously sailed on Anthem and Ovation so we knew what to expect with Quantum. Quantum is a good ship for Alaska with many interior spaces to spread out the crowds. I was surprised with items in disrepair when the ship had just gone through a dry dock. During our week, the following items were broken: iFly (not operational), screens in Two70 (not operational) and paint in need of refresh (especially on our cabin balcony). DINING – We were able to request a table for 2 prior to our cruise via email. We received a table near the window on Deck 3 (Chic). Our waiters (Aniket and Ahmad) were fantastic. They even allowed us to sit during the 2nd seating for our Juneau day as our excursion had us missing our normal dining time at 5pm. The food was generally great and they also offered to bring other dishes when we didn’t enjoy our first choices. SPECIALITY DINING – We booked both Jamie’s and Chops for lunches prior to boarding (great deals during Black Friday). Jamie’s is a great substitute for the Windjammer on embarkation day and we enjoy the lower key environment. Chops was for lunch on our anniversary and they treated us to a special dessert. My husband mentioned that the filet was his best steak on any Royal ship he had. The server also offered a special for our last day dinner at Wonderland. Wonderland was great and unique. STATEROOM: We originally booked an interior cabin but upgraded to a guarantee balcony a few months before sailing. We enjoyed the balcony but it was obstructed by the lifeboat…still would rather have this than an inside cabin! Our attendant Mel was great. We asked for evening service but he tended to just fit us in when we were out of our room during the day. This was fine as he seemed to have many rooms to make up. Only item that needs repair is the paint on the balcony. It was constantly chipping and leaving chips on our chairs. EMBARKING AND DISEMBARKING: We arrived to the port for embarkation around 9:30. We were able to offload our bags to the porter and enter the building right away. We were seated and waiting for our embarkation within 15 minutes. We had 10:30 time and were on the ship by this time. Disembarkation was great as well. We waited until later in the morning since we had a later flight out of Seattle. We used Seattle Express for our shuttle back to the airport. We had to wait 30 minutes or so for a free shuttle. RCL CROWN & ANCHOR: Their loyalty program is great! We are Diamond level and this comes with 4 drinks each at most any of their bars each 24 hour period. No need for us to purchase a drink package with 4 drinks daily at any time. Also we are provided with 24 hours each of free internet. Access to the crown lounge is also nice for Diamond and above. DAILY SHOWS AND ACTIVITIES: We like to stay busy during our cruises. We take advantage of most of the trivia offerings. Quantum did schedule the trivia sessions in larger venues than Harmony did last year which was great. We attended all the Entertainment offerings. Starwater had good singers and dancers. However, the crowd was quite rude leaving early (even when seated in the front rows). The concept was strange but no need to leave early. We also saw all the shows in the main theater. They were all good as well but none that I was hoping to see again on the same sailing. PORTS: Sitka – we just took the free shuttle to the town. The cruise line and port wanted you to book the shuttle through the Sitka port website but we never had our reservations checked. We walked from the shuttle stop to the Totem Pole park. It was a nice walk along the water with a peaceful hike through the park. We then went to the town and had a drink with chips and salsa at the pub recommended by the ship. Skagway – we got off the ship an hour after docking. We strolled through the downtown and got a doughboy (delicious). We then hiked part of the Lower Dewey trail to the overlook where you could see the ships. We made a reservation with White Pass Railway about 6 months prior. We had to check in with the ticket office and had noon departure. It was a great ride with fantastic views. Endicott Arm – we woke up at 5am for our sail into Endicott Arm. We sat on our balcony until we could see we were getting close. We then head up to the top decks for the viewing of the glacier. We got pretty close for great views. We then had breakfast at Solarium Bistro. We then took a nap for an active afternoon planned on Juneau. Juneau – we were one of the first in line to get off the ship in Juneau. We only have an hour until our excursion booked outside the ship was meeting. We did a bit of shopping before meeting for our excursion. We booked through Liquid Alaska an activity to canoe on Mendenhall Lake to the glacier. It was a short bus ride through Juneau. We then were outfitted in rain gear and boots for the canoe. The canoe held 6 tourists and 2 guides. It was total of 5 miles we paddled. It was an amazing experience with views that we could not have gotten otherwise. I consider this a bucket list excursion. I was feeling every bit my age at the end but it was totally worth it. Victoria – we only got off the ship to take a few pictures as we had dinner in Wonderland that evening and the time in port was 5pm-9pm.
