Coral Princess, with more than 700 balcony staterooms, was custom built to navigate the historic Panama Canal. Be sure to try the Bayou Café and Steakhouse, which features New Orleans-inspired Cajun and Creole cuisine, join friends for cocktails and Movies Under the Stars® by the pool or try some decadent treats at the International Café.
Coral Princess is a gem. Perfect for the Panama Canal cruise. She has "secret" forward decks on deck 10 and 11 which we utilized on Panama Canal day. Far away from the crowds on the Lido deck looking through glass. She also has aft decks on 11, 10, 9, and 8. Also great for the view of the wake and the canal. I loved the Sanctuary on this ship. It is aft, with it's own private pool, and sweeping views of the wake and sea from the lounge chairs. Excellent entertainment. She is an older ship, so some of the hallways could use updating, and the food in the main dining room was mostly good, but a bit hit and miss. Overall, an excellent ship, small in size and easy to get on and off in ports. The service is great, and the entertainment is excellent with many music venues. The shows I attended were all great, and packed with people. I highly recommend the Coral Princess sanctuary. It is in my view, the best in all the ships because it is aft, and has its own aft pool. All of the lounge chairs have beautiful seeping views of the ocean and wake. You get a healthy lunch menu and afternoon tea.
Sailed a back to back Alaska itinerary May 14-28 and the experience was a mixed bag. When it’s great it knocks everyone else out of the park; when it’s bad it’s mind boggling. ● The Ship - Perfect size with generous public space ratio indoors and outdoors. There are always place to relax indoors. Never a moment I felt I needed to fight for a spot to see the glacier. While I wished the glass panels on the decks were not tainted blue, there were more than enough open decks above the pool, at the aft (on each deck) and along the promenade for a variety of vantage points. The Universe Lounge is a unique space and they even had a production show fully utilizing it. Teak decking on the promenade certainly adds to the old worldly charm. ● The Crew - Everyone is in good morale though you can sense the pressure to deliver after the team won the line's excellence trophy for first quarter 2025. Overall the people make a great experience. ● Itinerary - It’s a thoughtful touch to visit College Fjord northbound and Hubbard Glacier southbound. Given the crazy Alaskan weather and great array of activities at each port, it’s also a good idea to visit Glacier Bay, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan twice. Skagway stood out as my favorite destination, though each of the three places had its unique charm. The White Pass railway is a must and remember to choose the last car for the unobstructed terrace view! ● Enrichment - It’s always nice to see a cruise line maintaining an enrichment program and having a naturist onboard. Michelle did her best in giving everyone basic understanding of the nature surrounding the cruise and drew our attention to wildlife sightings. The other guest speakers were also lovely. The NPS interpretation at Glacier Bay was not that extraordinary by comparison, though as always you can ask them anything when their Explorers Lounge booth is open. ● Wildlife sightings - Sea otters were easy to spot especially near the entrance of Glacier Bay. Several curious sea lions came to take a look and played in the wake inside Glacier Bay too. Dolphins and Humpbacks were sighted too. A fellow cruiser spotted a number of bald eagles. Hubbard Glacier provided the best opportunity to see seals and bears, though a board in Juneau indicated the area our ship entered was marked a restricted zone due to potential disturbance to seal habitat. ● Entertainment - Naathan Phan, the multi-talent performer who did two stellar shows and one trivial show on the second cruise, is the rockstar without a doubt. Best guest performer ever. Production show The Secret Silk was filled with spectacular set changes and a surprisingly sensitive approach to presenting Asian-ish cultural elements. Cruise Director Lloyd is an asset, and his team surely matches his energy and perfect comedic timing. But then there were the backup 70s and 80s theatre shows (for choppy seas?) that would have looked outdated even in 2005. The costumes and choreography of these tribute shows need a rethink. ● Room - I was assigned an obstructed seaview cabin on port side Deck 8 near the atrium. You do see a bit of snow capped mountains and the sky along the way, and the location is super handy with the option of using the panoramic elevator. But there is rock music spilling over from Wheelhouse Bar on Deck 7 until 11pm, and it’s a busy thoroughfare with people walking by at all times. Cabin doors lacked hydraulic door closers, so any door slamming by neighbours was very noticeable. There is plenty of storage and the walk-in closet is handy. The TV is massive for the room size, but it does not support screen mirroring (to play music on my phone) and the UI design was not intuitive. No one outside the Princess universe knows what “Vibes” stands for. It took some investigation to locate the full recordings of enrichment talks held on the voyage. The mattress was a dealbreaker. The mattress is very lightweight and feels like a bouncy sponge. When you sit on it, you sink into it and the whole mattress bounces up. The corridor noise, the mattress and the infamous early sunrises of Alaska made for not as good a sleep quality as the nine other cruises I’ve been on (mostly NCL). Hot water was unstable (in this cabin maybe?) but air conditioning is reliable. ● Food - As an NCL regular, I found the menu design and execution at the MDR on Coral Princess disappointing. It’s wonderful to have two lobster tails over 14 days, but most mains at the MDR were mediocre to bad. The salmon and seafood dishes are all excellent. Red meat mostly had a texture of tenderizing agent except for the regular New York steak - then the crust of my beef wellington was outright raw. The two Asian dishes I sampled on the menu were both WRONG - the colors were off, the taste left you wondering “what was that”, and the texture was borderline inedible. NCL put considerable effort into turning cheap ingredients into decent food. Princess does the opposite. I’m impressed by the starter and dessert choices at the buffet. Stewed dishes in the buffet were kept food-safe at boiling temperature so any meat became rubber. But I did cherish the deep fried chicken on the American nights and the free flowing scallops. I could always find something I like at the starter and dessert sections. Attempts of exotic food at the buffet were also presentable. The buffet restaurant was always filled to capacity in the mornings since outdoor tables aren't desirable in Alaska spring, but it's never difficult to secure a spot for a solo traveler like me. Bigger groups may want to visit the MDR for breakfast as it stays open until 9am. ● Overall I had a blast in Alaska, and Coral Princess does a stellar job on many very important aspects, just some of the basics on this particular ship did not work out for me.
100% would cruise Princess again. I will speak of smaller Princess ships. This is my third Princess cruise in one year (and ever). I've been cruising 55 years, on most of the major and some minor lines. It is hard to compare then and now. Things I love about Princess: Room layout dressing area. Friendly crew. Package perks. Complete promenade (please bring back loungers) Things that need improvement: Wine by the glass, bar staffing, MDR menu. Boarding in FLL was easy. Luggage was taken from Uber (not always so). Line was manageable. No discernible convenience for Platinum. Obstructed cabin was as expected. Cabin service was impeccable. Orange souffle on boarding was not to be missed! Ship is in fine condition, plenty of seating. Library unmatched, game room lovely. Sadly, receiving service in most areas, even with oceans now is marginal. Red wine by the glass in sub optimal. Premier package helps. Improvement is needed in this area. Overall bar service is lacking. Understaffing is the primary cause. Waiting +20mins regularly is unacceptable. Ordered Champagne, watched while one bottle was emptied and another completely different sort topped off my glass. Doubting overall that what you order is what you are actually served on many occasions. Food in specialty dining is great, service is 100% plus. MDR is adequate, although even in one year is less. Service is good, but in 16 days - lobster and escargot only once. Noticeable decline in quality. Chef is doing splendidly with less. Usually enjoy sharing a table. My experience this time.....well, um, less so. I enjoy production shows. They were great. Overall the women were stand outs on this troupe (not usually so in my experience). I'd like to say that 30 wardrobe changes do not a production show make. For the general age range of Princess, I think overall the entertainment is missing the mark. ie 5 decades extends only to the 80's. Sad I know! I'd enjoy more classical. Volume is TOO LOUD!!! everywhere. There are so many venues, but only 2 or 3 open at any one time. Wouldn't it be grand if you could choose various sort of music all day. Violins in the Atrium were lovely, and for far to short a time. Two excursions were worthwhile. Aruba snorkeling although weather prevented the feature (?!). Puerta Vallarta visit to Majahuitas was glorious. Do this now while it's new. Also Yelpa - so changed in 30 years. Panama Canal in old locks was the reason for this cruise. Lack of manners in fellow cruisers made the forward experience, sad. Aft experience was not forward, but far superior. Bucket list satisfied. Puerto Chiapas is underwhelming. $25 for two shuttle to town is, well we did it, wouldn't do it again. Huatulco - impeccably clean taxi to town $5. Lovely church. Mercado - if you've never been - go, if so then same old. Best part - fresh corn tortillas. Tip - beach restaurant exchange rate is ....poor. Disembarkation: was delayed. Luggage neatly arranged. Immigration seemed to be the hang up. One driving area that mixes incoming passengers and debarking passengers at the same time is never going to work well. Overall - really happy with Princess, especially the value of the packages. Left with the feeling that since you've already paid for drinks, it's no longer the profit center it once was. Absolutely would cruise Princess again, on smaller ships. I love this!
