Ship Reviews

We are on a back-to-back on Oceania’s Allura. We count the pennies all year so we can spend the big bucks on cruising and get away from the frigid midwest winter. We booked these cruises many months ago. Nevertheless we will have to change cabins after the first leg. We inquired a couple of times if we could stay in the same cabin but the answer was no, no, no. I was a little surprised that no accommodation was made for us despite having taken 21 cruises with Oceania. I am 79 and I use a walker. I had also requested a handicapped room but wasn’t surprised that none was available. We were assigned a cabin all the way forward, which is the longest distance from either bank of elevators and the longest distance from the restaurants. The halls are narrow and it has been an obstacle course every day, negotiating the linen carts and laundry bags. When we realized what a trek it was I thought it was worth one last try and I wanted to speak to the concierge about any possibility of changing cabins for the next leg. Although there was a concierge desk next to reception, there was no concierge. I asked at reception and I was told there was a concierge but only for the concierge cabins. So I waited in the long line at reception to plead my case to Vlad, who was conciliatory and pleasant but told me that nothing could be done on this cruise and and they wouldn’t know until the next cruise began if a cabin closer to the elevators would become available. I am tempted to go into tedious detail but if I do I’ll come across as a cranky old woman so I'll keep my lip zipped. There has been no resolution to the cabin difficulties and I am resigned. Our fare includes wine and beer at lunch and dinner. Since champagne is included I concluded that it was okay to order a mimosa at dinner. I was presented with a bill. What’s up with that? I wondered and was informed that if I wanted a mimosa I needed to order a glass of champagne and a glass of orange juice and make it myself. The next day at lunch I decided I had better clarify just exactly how this worked. I asked the sommelier about the times. He said I could order a glass of wine in any of the bars starting at 6:00 and in the restaurants at 6:30. So that evening I ordered my glass of soave while waiting for the Grand Dining Room to open and the endless line of people to file in. I was presented with a check. I said, “Uh uh, I have the wine and beer package.” After a couple of embarrassing moments the waiter called over his manager who finally gave up on trying to get me to sign the bill but who gave me a stern caution that 6:30 was the kick-off time for the vino—NOT 6:00. O used to have a happy hour before dinner. They still have a twofer but it’s at 9:00 at night. There has been grumbling about the change. The demographics being what they are, I suspect lots of folks are putting on their jams about that time. Maybe it’s a marketing trick to convince the old folks to stay up for the 9:30 show. Oceania claims to have the finest cuisine at sea. Some of it is excellent. A lot of it is not. The lobster Thermidor at Jacques is to die for but the charming ambiance of a French bistro is gone and “La Vie en Rose” doesn’t play in the background. I heard one woman say it was “industrial.” That description fits all of the restaurants and, in fact, the entire ship. No more murals on the ceilings, no wood paneling. It’s all steel and glass and straight lines and the art is nonrepresentational. This is a matter of taste and I have heard more than one person say what a beautiful ship it is. Not to me. But back to the finest cuisine at sea. I was disappointed with Toscana. The lasagna was lovely, the veal marsala wasn’t. In my world the spa would be overpriced. A 75 minute massage is $300 with the tip/service fee. Along with shipboard credit, O gives loyalty members a spa voucher for $150. So the $4 a minute massage in the cruise world doesn’t sound so extravagant. Our veranda cabin is relatively spacious with lots of storage. The bathroom is outstanding—not the telephone booth shower I usually associate with cruise ships. The bed was okay but pushing two twins together is never as comfortable as a real queen. I doubt there’s much much alternative to that configuration. It’s just an observation, not a complaint. The waiters and cabin stewards and maintenance staff are what’s great about Oceania. They never fail to impress and amaze me. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The Food and service were very good. A tour in Jamica was cancelled prior to boarding, but we were not notified until we arrived on the ship. On a twelve day cruise with eight planned ports of call there were many changes. The sequence of the first two ports were reversed. Three ports were cancelled or changed at the last minute. We missed 3 ports due to wind or expected bad weather. Roattan and Grand Cayman were missed due to reported winds. We were told other ships did dock or wait for better conditions. The Key West visit was changed to Nasaua, Bahamas due to a weather front forcasted for the next day. Apologies were minimal and no compensation was given for missing the ports and having extra sea days. The food and overall service was very good. The bar service in the Horizon lounge was very slow or unavailable most nights.

Our first cruise. It was a wonderful experience. The ship is gorgeous and beautifully appointed. Our accommodation was clean and comfortable. The staff could not seem to do enough for us. They treated us like royalty. Entertainment was excellent. We enjoyed every nightly program. All entertainers were first class and very talented. We appreciated a comedian who didn't need to shock or swear to make his audience laugh, a pianist whose range was wide. We were especially appreciative of the talent and musicianship of the Bright String Quartet and their ability to present such a variety of different music genres From classical to pop. And the FOOD! The food was amazing at every venue from the Terrace Buffet to the Grand Dining Room to the specialty restaurants. Each meal was unique, delicious and presented creatively. It seemed as though every time we ate something it became our new favorite! Overall a totally awesome experience.

Our first time on Oceania. We have cruised on all the big lines before last year being the Sun Princess for 14 days. We have cruised on RCI, Holland America, Princess, Celebrity and even Carnival once. The Allura is beautiful, clean and immaculate. Service was outstanding. High quality food with access to 4 speciality dining rooms. We had the concierge room which gave us access to the private spa lounge area which was less busy and you could also find an empty lounge chair. This ship is perfect for cruises who want a quite restful cruise. It would be boring for kids as there is no kids program and no areas dedicated for kids. Room steward was excellent, Room service was very timely. If you ask for room service between 8 and 8:30 am, it would arrive at 8:01. Cabin was nice and bathroom-show big. Picky negatives. Show theatre had low slope for viewing and 1 show each night at 9:30 PM. Ship missed 3 ports of call. The missed call at Grand Cayman (GC) really annoyed me. There 4 ships anchored outside the Island. We were told the sea was too rough to tender in and we departed right away. We were also told 2 other ships were leaving as well. However we received messages from people on the other ships asking why we left as they were tendering in to GC. Oceania never explained why we left and the other ships didn't. I am sure they would have been aware of what the other ships were doing. Then we missed Key West and went to rainy Nassau. Again, not sure why. Disembarkation was fast, very fast. No facial recognition at border security but the line moved quickly. At least 2 border agents. Cruise Director (CD) was low key, nothing like the CD on the Sun Princess who was super hyper. Ship was very smooth although the ocean was not that rough either.
