Ship Reviews

We had sworn off cruising after previous experiences, mainly on the mega ships. We decided to give Oceania a shot after watching advertisements on TV and investigating more about “small ship” luxury cruises. I put that term in quotes as this is still a large vessel, but small in comparison. With 1,200 passengers instead of the 4,000/5,000 it was more of the atmosphere we were looking for. It was obviously catering towards an older crowd, which we painfully fit into these days… They advertise an exceptional culinary experience with four flagship restaurants aboard. Each of them were very good and a couple I would rate as exceptional. The main dining was much better than we had experienced on other ships, but was certainly not exceptional. The Terrace Cafe, which is the buffet was hit and miss. Much of the hot food was barely warm, but they had a good variety to choose from. The staff was excellent across the board. We really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere around the pool since it did not have blasting music and screaming kids running around. Did I say we fit into the older crowd? We also had some disappointments with excursions. We had 2 of them cancelled on us very late in the game which left us no other options as the others were sold out by then. Some of the tour guides we had were not great as they felt they needed to fill every second of time with talk that sometimes turn politically biased. One of our excursions took us to a town that had nothing open and was barely inhabited. All this said, we enjoyed this enough that we booked another cruise with Oceania for next year. My hope is that some of the honest feedback will help us be able give them a five star review next time!!

We have sailed with Oceania 14 times. All our experiences have been excellent in every department. On this cruise the food in Polo Grill was so bad that we walked out without finishing any of the courses. Other than that the ship was beautiful and the service was excellent in every department specially House Keeping, Red Ginger, Toscana and Terrace Cafe. The introduction of The Creperie is excellent so is the modification of the entire Barista Area. The New Tender Boats were very nice. All the Ports were excellent specially Funchal, St Johns and Halifax. Too bad they cancelled Horta at the last moment. The stores on Board Allura was terrible. They changed the company that runs the stores. There was no selection, all they had were jewellery and VERY VERY expensive hand bags. The prices were ridiculously high. We understand all the ships are changing to this new supplier.

This was my second cruise, the previous with Viking and travelling with adult family. Firstly, the ship is beautiful, quite stunning. My only ‘gripe’ is that I felt that putting the casino in between the lovely Martini’s lounge and the Founders bar spoilt the ambience of the area as you make your way to the GDR ( Grand Dining Room). However, all other areas were very tasteful and comfortable. Cabins were great. Comfortable, very well appointed with decent sized bathroom /shower. Lots of storage space too and places to hang up damp towels, swimming shorts etc. Dining was mixed - overall, slightly better than Viking, the afternoon tea for instance was definitely a notch or two higher. The highlights were Toscana ( stunning ) Jacques and Red Ginger. GDR was mixed with mostly very good but also some average coming out from the kitchen and one poor meal leading to an unpleasant meeting with the chef which should never have happened. The Terrace Cafe buffet was very good and was the most consistent with excellent variety and choices and some of the best puddings and desserts that I have had almost anywhere. Polo Grill was, sadly, missable and we didn’t return to it. One of our group ate at Waves and enjoyed it, Aquamar was fine but not our thing, we decided. Wines and drinks were better overall and of a better quality and choice than those offered on Viking too. Service was superb and hard working staff absolutely brilliant, friendly, efficient and willing to help ( grumpy chef aside ). These people are Oceania’s stars, nothing seemed too much and always smiling. Entertainment mixed - the quality of what we saw ( shows, Phil Tagg comedian, speakers) were great, really enjoyed what we saw in the theatre and music played by ships musicians in various areas. However - and this may improve as the ship ‘matures’ - the actual timing of this was awful. For instance - Everyday, tea was at 4 and trivia quiz at 4:30 pm, prompt. So, unless you stuffed a scone and ran, you could not do both. There were some interesting talks but they were not repeated so you got one chance to be there or you missed it but the diamond selling, sorry, educational talk was repeated ad infinitum! So, timings need to better and the talks and shows given two chances. Thus, 3 stars. Boutiques very expensive with mostly only high end clothing and jewellery - with lots of jewellery sales based talks. Zero stars… though the guy doing the talks was great, more talks without the salespitch could have been worth attending. A proper shop without $6,000 watches may have been useful. We liked the spa deck ( concierge and above had own spa deck ) but didn’t use main pool though the pool deck was well thought out with plenty of space and spaces to sun-bathe or curl up in a corner with a book. Great cocktails from pool bar also. Disembarkation and embarkation - fine. Easy and pretty stress free. No children's entertainment at all. Do not take youngsters, they will hate it and so will the mainly-of-an-age guests. The biggest issue over Viking was that the excursions were all at additional cost and some were very expensive. One was about $100 which was 7 minute bus ride to a monument and then walk the cliff path back down to the ship… Another was similar with the guide talking in depth and constantly about all sorts which frankly was boring and whilst the house we visited was interesting, it meant we missed walking the town completely and at $120 was too much. Overall, really enjoyed the two weeks but would not bother with excursions on next trip.

We loved this cruise! We loved the new ship, the decor and we loved our Penthouse suite. Lots of drawer storage, closet storage and a spacious bathroom with double sink and a large shower with rain shower and handheld shower head. I will be brief as I wrote a long review only to find it disappeared when I want to submit the review so this review will be a basic summary. I personally thought all the specialty restaurants were very good. I especially liked Toscano. Others in our group liked Polo or Jacques best and all loved Red Ginger. Service in all of these restaurants was excellent. The pool area is lovely. We did not use many of the amenities as we usually were out all day at each port with only enough time to return, shower and head to dinner. However the facilities looked great. While I liked all the ports I was a bit disappointed that some major ones ie Barcelona were on a day when many galleries, museums or stores were closed. I feel the cruise itinerary should try harder to schedule most interesting ports on days when most shops, museums etc are open. Also I am not a fan of Tarragona as the arrival port for Barcelona. I know there are reasons for this but Barcelona is a great city and ended up as one of our most tedious days. 1.5 hours each way by bus was not fun and the ship did not arrive in port until 10 am so our arrival to Barcelona was just for the afternoon. Made me feel that perhaps Spain is better explored by car as a land trip. So much to see and do and on a cruise it was a bit difficult. Fortunately I have been to Spain several prior times so I was fine but it was a first time for our travel companions. On top of that Spain has a very serious siesta time every day. Times can vary. Somedays in some ports it was 1-4 in others it was 2-5pm. In so much as some of the ports were small or lesser known towns and more historic than anything else, the afternoon was a bit eh. Not enough time to dare to taxi to a nearby city(in an attempt to do a 2 town day) so we walked around for a while , ate the requisite gelato or expresso and then headed back to the boat earlier than we might have. Nonetheless we did enjoy all the ports. Gibraltar was a big surprise as it was very interesting. My tip for Gibraltar is to go on the boat excursion or hire a taxi driver /licensed guide or book a tour with driver to drive you around as the sites are not necessarily close and the walking up and down a very high 'rock" mountain is pretty challenging even for the fittest. They also have duty free shopping at most of the stores in the main shopping street which was a surprise. The street is lined with jewelry stores. Reminded me a bit like St Thomas. In Malaga the Picasso Museum was excellent. Do your research prior on each port. Find out what exhibits, special events, festivals might be taking place the day you are in port. In many cases it was wise to purchase advance tickets for special limited time exhibits but my research paid off. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise and would recommend Oceania.
