Ship Reviews

We had a wonderful time on this our first cruise with Oceania. I had done quite a bit of research in order to get most out of the trip - which for us was a trip around the world if you include the flights. We booked our flights and also some excursions on our own. Embarkation was a breeze as we arrived at our scheduled time and seemed among the first people on the ship. We relaxed on a very comfortable sun chair until our room was ready around 14:00. We loved our state room. Light and spacious and they had even provided us with two single comforters as we don't like to share. We had plenty of space to store all our clothes, cameras, laptops and luggage. The bathroom was really large and had lots of stroage as well. We met our stewards who took ery well care of us. The service on the ship is simply excellent - always friendly and forthcoming. We stayed in a Concierge room, however did not make use of much of the added benefits - besides enjoying the prosecco on arrival and using the concierge lounge to fetch some coffee and snacks every once in a while. During our trip we enjoyed a few room service breakfasts - which were quite good but in general we enjoyed breakfast in the Terrace buffet restaurant. At night our favorite was the Grand dining room. Food was good to very good with just one or two meals that did not quite suit me. But tastes are different and just because it wasn't to my taste does not mean it was bad. The specialty restaurants - I am not sure if they are really so special? Most - but not all - of the dishes would sooner or later be offered in the Grand dining room. It was nice to have a change of location and decor but all in all we preferred the GDR for dinner. Our cruise started in Japan - where had booked one excursion with Oceania which was good, informative and well managed. Once we left Japan we had six sea days while crossing over to Alaska. During this time there were plenty of courses and games offered - which we really did not make a lot of use of as we were busy with other things. We never felt bored during this time. Yes, most of the the guest are in the age range of late sixties to eighties but that is just fine. All guests are there to have a good time. We chatted with quite a few - it was very easy to get a conversation going but never felt pressured in any way. We liked the fact that we could meet so many people from around the world. Our cruise director - Carson - was simply amazing, very much enyoud his daily talks and his show! Our captain gave a very informative and enjoyable talk every day that I looked forward to and actually learned quite a bit from. Once in Alaska we had two more excursions booked via Oceania which we liked. All in all everything was well organized - including the migration processes we had to go through in Japan and US. Disembarkation did take a bit longer than expected but that was due to some technical issues that could not have been avoided and amounted to less than 15 minutes delay for us - actually not even worth mentioning. We had only cruised once before this cruise and after our first cruise were not even sure if cruising was for us. This cruise, however, was simply wonderful and we booked another while still on board. The one regret we have is that we started to watch the shows in the Rivieria lounge only toward the end of the cruise. The shows we did see were very much fun to watch.

We sailed to Alaska on the Riviera just last week. Interestingly, I couldn't find much about this particular itinerary or this ship. So, I figure I'd give whoever is reading some good intel on what to expect. This ship is BEAUTIFUL! It has been refurbished and is truly spectacular in every way. The ship is elegant, but welcoming. What I found especially pleasing was the beautiful way the different areas were designed to complement and not compete with each other. There were subtle differences in the common spaces, but always with lovely furnishings and art. The staterooms have beautiful moldings and woodwork. Many of the bathrooms have been refurbished to have large showers (instead of the shower over tub arrangement), . And luxurious Bvlgari toiletries. Thank goodness for the additional drawer storage in the bathroom, as we had just enough space for our things. I was, however, a little surprised that there weren't more drawers or shelves for our clothing. Since this was an Alaska cruise, we brought more than usual, so this aspect of your particular sailing needs may not be applicable. Entertainment: The bands were great! I loved the band up in the Horizon's bar. They played three times during the evening and had an incredible repertoire. Coming from a musician's perspective, they were excellent. They played well and varied their styles throughout their sets. Something for everyone...and they were NICE. They interacted with the guests and made us feel welcome. There was also a string quartet on board. They were quite good, and also varied their selections of music. The shows were good....entertaining, and fun. There is only one show per night...at 9:30 PM. It works out okay as dinner begins at 6:30 PM. As for the food. Lots of choices. Heavy on the seafood, and if you like that, you'll be in heaven. My husband especially enjoyed the pastries and desserts...not only were they beautiful, but delicious. I found it slightly challenging to eat at the buffet with my egg and dairy allergies, but I could always find a salad, bread, or burger. The room service menu was extensive. There were numerous offerings, and the food was excellent. We ate mainly in the main dining room, but had the opportunity to try their specialty restaurants as part of our included cruise fare. They were all excellent. However, I was not as excited with the steaks as I wanted to be at Toscana. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar cart was an impressive and delicious surprise. There was a vegan option for every course nightly in the dining room, and the staff was very accommodating to my dietary allergies. There was one evening that a special vegan/plant-based burger was on the menu, and it was honestly the best of its kind I have ever had. I had the Jacques Pepin-inspired salmon a few nights, and enjoyed it immensely. Onboard, there are cooking and art classes. The cooking classes cost extra, but he art classes are included. As a professional artist, I was game to try these. I was very impressed with the calibre of the instruction However, I understand that this particular model for the cruises may be changing. I hope not, because it was great for professionals as well as beginning artists. Excursions: I found them to be slightly pricy, but I think that is typical for an upscale cruise line, and in particular, Alaska. One may be able to book some independent excursions through other venues. There is no discount, though, for the Icy Straight Pointe zip line. At $240 per ride, it was a bit rich for my wallet, but it looked like a terrific adventure. I was able to book the Skagway Railroad train on my own, for much less than from Oceania. Making our way to the depot was not a problem, and as I understand from other passengers, our trip was the same as the one booked through the line. (Of course, I did not mention my bargain.) There are many other options for tours apart from the cruise line, but sometimes it is easier to just book through the Oceania website to make sure you can secure the tour you don't want to miss. Plus, the ship will not leave without you if you're not onboard in time. If you do decide to book separately, a good rule of thumb is to give yourself a cushion of two hours (after the tour ends)so you don't miss your ship, in case of an unexpected delay. Also, be on the lookout for surprise opportunities...we enjoyed an impromptu tour in Ketchikan, which worked out exceptionally well. We booked it right off the dock, after being dropped off from our shuttle into town. Our native guide taught us the history of the area and his people. We traveled up and down the coastline, looking for wildlife, saw and learned about the types of totems, had a photo op at a gorgeous waterfall, and even toured "Dolly's house". (a deal at $75) Our trip was mid May, and it was unusually cold and rainy. I am often cold, so I was wearing an under base layer, flannel shirt, fleece zip, light down jacket, followed by a lined waterproof raincoat. The fleece zip and raincoat came from Amazon, and I've been very pleased with both purchases. Be sure to track the weather before your trip, and if it is projected to be cold when you'll be there, also get some wool blend socks and WATERPROOF hiking shoes. I wore my Columbia pair every day as it was rainy and cold throughout our trip. One last comment. Every person we met in Alaska was warm, friendly, helpful, and kind. Residents and seasonal workers alike were welcoming. This is a trip you'll cherish, and honestly, my photos do not do it justice; it is beyond beautiful.
