This was a flawless experience for our family of five (two college kids and a 14 year old). Loved the long time in the ports, the food was delicious and above all else, the staff was memorably kind, charming and helpful. The ship itself: -It's a large, easy to navigate ship that is constantly being cleaned. --We had two balcony rooms on deck 9. This was plenty of space. The pullout bed is as comfortable as a regular bed, according to my son. The bathrooms were decently sized and there was plenty of space for our stuff and luggage -Never needed the shoe holders people recommended packing. We had room for everything. -The Observation Lounge was our favorite place to hang, especially before 5 pm and during the Glacier day! -Pools are small, hot tubs crowded. -The track is a nice touch, but definitely not an option for exercise unless you go when no one is there. -The fitness center is fine, but nothing to write home about. Plenty of treadmills, fully equipped with weight machines, but not a lot of space for yoga/floorwork. -I never used the elevators (I know people complain about them) and hey, I didn't gain any weight on this trip while eating plenty!! But I do get why people don't like these elevators as they are always crowded. Favorite restaurants: -Teppanyaki -La Cucina -Ocean Blue -All of the MDR restaurants were similar and very good. -The Garden Cafe was MOBBED at all hours. The food was good, but that was a bit of a hectic experience. Entertainment -The 90s show was just okay but still enjoyed seeing it. -Phenomenal new show Wild Cards--great dancing and singing and costumes. Wish we saw it twice. -We loved the hokey newlywed game and couples games. -This may be shocking but my kids--again, a teen and college kids-really, really loved Emily and Arvin, even when they did not recognize the music. Many nights were wrapped up watching them belt out songs from the 80s and before! -My husband and I loved the guitar and piano player. Excursions: I'll speak to the ones I did through NCL, or were available through NCL but booked through another provider. -Ketchikan: Yes, do the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman Boat tour. It is as amazing as people say it is! Watch an episode or two of Deadliest Catch (Amazon Prime Video) before so you have some context. We LOVED this! -Juneau: The summer dog sled camp excursion was our favorite experience of the cruise, and no, we didn't pay for the helicopter/snow dogs experience, just the one where the dogs take you through the rainforest. The dogs are so fun and cute, their handlers so loving with them and informative, and the rainforest is beautiful. We also took Lyft to the Mendenhall Glacier National Park and hiked to Nugget Falls. This was our FAVORITE day of the whole cruise! Loved the hike (it's easy, also.) -Skagway: Best of Skagway through NCL was really good, just long. There were highs and lows. The highs: that visit to the old-timey show followed by a salmon bake, and the bus ride to Fraser, Canada, was absolutely the best part. I wish we had more time in Fraser, but the entire experience was awesome! My kids loved the show and the lunch. The lows: ughhhh, the "brothel" part really weirded out my kids. I hadn't thought about this when I booked it but they found this part creepy, not cute. Also, while the White Pass train ride back was beautiful, it's kind of long. -Sitka: We did a Wildlife Boat Tour with Homestead stop that also included Fortress of the Bear. Seeing bears on the boat tour was 10x more exciting than seeing the bears in a sanctuary but it was still good to go there first. I wouldn't recommend JUST doing the Fortress of the Bear without another activity as it's pretty short. We all loved the homestead part--smores by a campfire in Alaska is just an amazing experience (when you grow up in Florida!!) -Victoria: Sites & Bites Tour. SO fun, great way to see this charming historical city! It's not a lot of food, FYI. Icy Strait Point: We paid the $49 each for the gondola ride and thought this was the biggest waste of money the whole trip. You actually have more to experience the level below it (the free green gondola). We did get some great photos there and saw a whale! But this was the least impressive of all our stops. In Seattle, Museum of Pop Culture was awesome!!! And the Pikes Place Market, which we stopped at pre-cruise, was really fun and a good way to start the vacation on a fun note.
We had a great time on the Joy, this was our second cruise in the last year on the Joy. From embarkation to disembarkation everything went smoothly. We stayed at the Marriott Waterfront the night before the cruise and I would highly recommend it. The cruise terminal is literally across the street and we were able to walk to it. Check in process was quick and we were on the ship within 15 minutes. We wandered around a bit before settling in the observation lounge to wait for our cabin Once at our cabin, we met our steward Del, from St. Lucia. He was fantastic. Always smiling and cheerful. He took care of us very well. The ship as always was immaculate. There are plenty of things to do if you are so inclined, from water slides to the race track. We ate at several specialty restaurants, Ocean Blue, Cagney's (twice), La Cucina and Teppanyaki. Each mile was excellent. The complimentary restaurants were also good. The only disappointing one was the Local. We normally book shore excursions from private tour groups, but we used NCL for all of our tours. I will review those individually. The weather for the most part was good, though in Alaska, it can change daily, but never too bad. Finally for disembarkation we walked off with our bags, and no issue at all.
