Ship Reviews

We know everyone has their opinions, but for us, the bottom line is simple: for the price, this cruise was a fantastic experience. One of our main goals was to visit Bar Harbor, and we learned that NCL is currently the only major cruise line still able to port there—thanks to a contract that’s valid for another seven years. We tendered at two ports. Newport had a bit of a wait getting back onboard, but Bar Harbor was much smoother. The weather was perfect, and the ship had just been refurbished—our room and the common areas were fresh and comfortable. We stayed in a Club Balcony Suite, which we loved. The bathroom was spacious, with a double sink and a massaging shower wall—such a nice touch. Onboard communication has definitely improved, and there were plenty of fun activities. We didn’t attend any shows, but we enjoyed the ICE bar and purchased the Thermal Spa pass for the week—it was peaceful and relaxing. I did the 100-minute seaweed wrap on embarkation day (with a great discount), and it was amazing—it even included a massage! A heads-up: when you're in port, drinks are taxed—even with a package. We knew that going in, so no surprises there. We tried several specialty dining options. Teppanyaki was fun and the food was good, though it was very loud—that’s our only complaint. At Ocean Blue, I had the cioppino, which was absolutely delicious. Le Bistro was also great. We had a late reservation but stopped by early and were seated two hours ahead of schedule. Excursions were a highlight. In Newport, we skipped the buses and did a private sail with McCurdy Sailing—a 36-ft boat just for my husband and me. We brought champagne and sailed for two hours. Highly recommend! In Boston, we explored on foot and had a blast at Barking Crab. Getting around by cab and Uber was super easy. In Bar Harbor, we did the Acadia Park & lobster tour through NCL, which was solid. You can also just walk around, shop, and eat. We heard Cadillac Mountain now requires reservations—possibly not through ship tours. St. John was okay. We took a cab to Reversing Falls, but finding one back was tricky. Not much to do nearby, though Vito’s had great pizza. Halifax was fun—the boardwalk has lots to offer. We did a private tour to Peggy’s Cove, which I love, but the tour company didn’t impress us. Although our driver was very accommodating. Finally, after disembarking, we did the Old & New NYC tour. It included Grand Central Station and the Summit—both were fantastic. Unfortunately, some guests got on the wrong bus, which cut into our time a bit.

So we booked at last minute. We have done this itinerary several times on 3 different cruise lines. No surprises. We had great weather, unlike previous cruises. Embarkation was somewhat confusing but once through security, lines were clearly marked and we made our way to the check in counter with no problem. Our assigned boarding time was 11 am. Luggage delivery lagged until about 4 o’clock. Items we had requested in our booking were lacking in the stateroom, but once we located the room steward, he remedied! the omissions. Overall he was very efficient. We miss the evening turndown as the room is serviced once a day. Dining was adequate. Fish dishes were good, unlike last time on NCL, when they were over cooked and salty. Portions satisfactory. I appreciated the waiters turning an appetizer size salad into dinner size salads at lunch on those days we ordered soup and salad for lunch. You now have to ask for baked goods in morning and bread at lunch and dinner. Cagney’s was good, la Cucina lousy except for the pizza they served between appetizer and main course. Best part of meal. The diner on deck 16 a hidden gem. Best burgers on the ship. Lounge entertainment was varied and professional. The Rumors production show featuring Fleetwood Mac music was sensational, comics okay. The other production shows were uninteresting to us Septuagenarians. The performers were great, the material was unrecognizable. Inside cabin typical. Adequate storage space. Clean. We did not do any shore excursions because we had been to these ports several times and have exhausted the various tourist destinations. We have our favorite oyster, clam and lobster spots in each port where we have leisurely lunches. Disembarkation was smooth. We took the first time where the ship would transfer the luggage. From that the time they called us to getting through customs took no longer than 15 minutes All in all, a relaxing week. No surprises. No major disappointments. .
