Ship Reviews

This was our first cruise on Cunard and we would consider cruising on Cunard again. We took the crossing from NYC to Southampton. Pros 1) stable thru rough seas 2) This was our first cruise on Cunard. If you are an Anglophile, you will love Cunard's Queen Mary 2: 1950s art deco style, large photos of royalty, 1940s and 1950s movie stars, 1950s lounge music (I heard As Time Goes By from the movie "Casablanca" in the grand lobby). Several BBC channels, afternoon tea every day, marmalade and jams in little round glass jars, British condiments such as vegemite, British breakfast available every morning, 10 varieties of tea bags in buffet. Afternoon tea with live music no extra charge while Princess charges a fee. 3) good selection of gluten free dishes and breads, better than Celebrity, Princess and Virgin. Lots of almond and oat milk. Illy coffee better than Lavazza on Princess and Celebrity. Carinthia Lounge has healthier, appetizer sized dishes 4) If you are an intellectual and/or introvert, you will love the Queen Mary 2. Unlike other cruise lines, it has lectures and plays, a large library (whose seats fill up quickly), and a bookstore. It has several quiet lounges with soothing lounge music, not loud boomer pop songs. 5) no haranguing announcements by chipper cruise director three times a day. On QM2, she has channel on TV where she discusses the daily events 6) free laundromats and soap included. Princess charges a fee. Celebrity and Virgin don't have laundromats. 7) organized transfers from Southampton to airports and London, including St. Pancras International train station 8) nice bathrobes 9) soothing classical music for breakfast and lunch in buffe entertainment good: singer and pianist in Chart Room and afternoon tea 10) TV channels with movies dubbed in Spanish, French, German and Japanese 11) Observation: First day, clocks set forward one hour at noon. (Other cruise lines change the time in the middle of the night.) Hard working staff not deprived of an hour of sleep. But did shorten availability of lunch by an hour, which explains long line at Brittania Dining Room. We waited to go to the buffet and when they started closing, we grabbed what we could without time to browse. The next day we went to the buffet when it opened at 11:30 am. Setting clocks at noon encourages everyone to eat lunch then and eating according to new time eases adjustment. 12) Dress code not as strict as expected. "Smart attire" means dress for cocktail party or business casual. Two gala (formal) nights during our week long crossing to Southampton. One formal night I wore suit and tie and my wife wore a sparkly dress. Some passengers were very posh and were ready for dinner at Downton Abbey. Cons 1) poor insulation. Could feel cold air flowing into room from balcony. Needs caulking and weatherstripping. In January, outside 32-35 degrees, so public areas about 65 F. 2) told us to arrive at 3 pm, which is later than other cruise lines. Maybe the staff needs more time to clean cabins. We arrived at 2pm with no crowding. 3) no guide listing what is on each TV channel. When pressed "channel list" and "guide", had info on only a few channels. We had to go thru each channel and write down our own TV guide. Unlike Celebrity and Princess, no interactive movies on TV we can start and stop on command 4) On embarkation day, wifi was slow. I tried to make reservation for planetarium on my voyage app but page for entertainment did not load. I also tried to look at stateroom services but page did not load. On first day at sea, my voyage app pages loaded, and showed titanic and apollo shows already sold out. 5) my voyage app close to useless. Able to check my on board account the first day, but other days showed no info. Purser's desk changed my phone to London time zone and then it started to work 6) To make a reservation for the planetarium, I had to wait in line for 24 minutes for the purser's desk. The clerk said planetarium unavailable due to maintenance, but I could sign up for titanic and apollo shows, which were already sold out. 7) Buffet had no berries (blueberries, strawberries, etc.). Too many cream based soups and not enough broth soups. Salad bar not large enough and not enough kale or broccoli. Buffet better on Virgin, Celebrity and Princess.

We signed up for the Literary Cruise for the week’s cruise from New York to Southampton. It was our first experience of a cruise, and in general we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had booked a balcony cabin with a partially obstructed view, but as the weather was freezing, we didn’t spend much time outside! The cabin was small but perfectly formed. The design was so excellent that it easily lost our two huge suitcases and their contents. Everything had its place, and it was warm, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Indeed, I wish I could have lived in it all the time, as it was all so easy. It was situated on Deck 5 midships, which meant that in the Force 10 storm we endured, we hardly felt the ship pitch or yaw at all. Service on the boat was superb. The crew were so hard working, and nothing was too much trouble. The food is excellent in general, though we found the quality of the baked goods a bit lacking. They were sometimes a bit bland, and as a keen baker myself, it was the only thing that made me miss home. But the rest of the dining was brilliant, especially the Verandah Restaurant, where I had one of the best steaks of my life, and well worth the $65 dollars extra pp. Afternoon tea in the Queens Room is very popular, though again, the quality of baked goods was fine but not excellent. Our main reason for the trip was the Times Literary Festival. Some of the talks were really good, especially those by James Holland, Anna Reid (historians), and Simon Armitage )[poet laureate). I found the daily news review by the great and good a bit tedious, with some lazy swipes at Trump that taught me nothing, and not many genuine insights on offer. For us, the best activities were the wonderful ballroom dancing classes adorable brother and sister duo, and strangely the Sunday service where the captain spoke with real feeling of his meeting with centenarian war veterans on the ship. The gym, fabulous bars and live music also deserve a mention. The fact that I’ve already booked another Cunard cruise probably speaks volumes. We’re really smitten with cruising having rather sneered at it in the past as something for portly seniors, which I now am!

The Queen Mary continues to deliver a special experience overall. Adult-oriented, good to excellent food and entertainment. The jazz music at night is really special and one of the main reasons why we come back. The string group was also great. On the down side, Cunard hires talented pianists, but the music they play seems to get more banal every year. Its tantamount to elevator music. We also very much miss the classical afternoon piano recitals and were sorry to hear that they are stopping the planetarium. These are things that set Cunard, especially the QM2, apart. I hope that the claissical pianists come back! Happy to report that the Grills experience is back. We had some less than inspiring experiences when the ships started sailing again after the pandemic, but this trip was really nice. Especially enjoyed afternoon tea on the Grills Deck and in the Grills Lounge. The spa services were very good and Cunard continues to offer a decent variety of shore excursions. The de-boarding time for excursions seems to have improved. Unfortunately, the high end jewelry store is gone, replaced by a high seas version of Claire's. The wine tasting lunch was a fun experience. We had one dinner at The Verandah and it was great. Wonderful steak and great to see that they are using humanely raised beef and other well-sourced items at The Verandah and elsewhere. I still miss the old Verandah, which served exceptional continental food in a more special environment, but this was very nice.
