Ship Reviews

This trip was my third on the Journey, but my first as a solo traveler. I had booked an inside cabin through a third part (Cruise Kingdom) and was upgraded at no charge to an obstructed view cabin. The cabin was fine, comfortable and roomy, with plenty of closet and drawer space for a single passenger. Fortunately, there was no sofa, which would have made the cabin too crowded. The food was excellent, we had two super buffet brunches and special teas on our 18 day cruise. It was clear that Azamara made a special effort to provide an improved enrichment program. In addition to a (mediocre in my opinion) destination speaker, we had two excellent speakers on topics that I found fascinating. This was my first solo cruise, and I would happily cruise solo again on Azamara. The assistant cruise director hosted a solo travelers gathering a few times, and we continued to meet up on our own, there was a special solo dinner in the Main Discoveries Dining Room. The warm atmosphere and friendly passengers made the cruise a pleasure. I especially enjoyed the watercolor class. Every sea day (we had 11 sea days on an 18 day cruise) there was a class at 1:00 pm. Our teacher was a professional watercolor artist who supplied everything we needed: watercolors, brushes, special paper, pencil and erasers for preliminary sketches and photos for inspiration. The classes proved so popular that the number of participants had to be limited to 30 so everyone could have a paint box, etc. There was an entire table of men who participated, more than I expected. While I found the teacher's teaching technique challenging, I enjoyed his painting style and his choice of subjects, and the friendly, cooperative spirit among the participants. He was also generous with paint and supplies. The speakers on British criminal law and challenging travel experiences were both excellent. They were well prepared, very informed, and enthusiastic about their subjects, and took questions and comments happily. I came to as many lectures as possible and watched the ones I missed on the in-house TV. Although there was no AzAmazing evening on this cruise, the staff gave us several deck barbecues, including a great White Night party. The two performances by African guest musicians were outstanding. For the first time I joined a trivia team on this cruise. We had a great time and some pretty outlandish guesses. Until now I had often listened in while doing a jigsaw puzzle in the adjacent room. It was much more fun to play on a team. As always, the food and service in the main dining room were excellent. Filet mignon was on the menu twice -- delicious and perfectly prepared. I found the Patio on deck 9 to be a great alternative when I wanted to be out in the fresh air. While I personally prefer the Main Dining Room, the Window Cafe always had fresh, not dishes and helpful staff. I had a female cabin attendant for the first time, and she was excellent, always smiling and very considerate. The room was always spotless and fresh-smelling. I appreciated the nightly chocolates, an improvement from the tiny cubes of cake on previous Journey cruises. I found the guest relations staff polite and always helpful. Especially useful for independent tourist like me are the information pages and maps for every port destination. I am disappointed that Azamara's website is not user friendly. For some reason each "page" is only half of the computer screen. It is very difficult to navigate, and hard to find ways to reach Azamara (I live 7 time zones from the Eastern time zone in the US). And it is imperative that Azamara use an app! That is long overdue. On the whole I love Azamara, and it has spoiled me for using the mass market cruise lines forever!

What a wonderful experience! This was our first cruise with Azamara and on a smaller ship and we thoroughly loved it. Embarkation was so simple compared to larger lines. From arrival at the port in Lisbon to setting foot on the ship, it couldn't have been more than 30 minutes. While waiting for our cabin to be prepared, we ate at the buffet and were impressed with the many options, even for us as pescatarians. Our oceanview cabin was spacious and well maintained. Our cabin stewart was awesome! He provided us with water and Coke Zeros in our fridge for the duration of the crossing. My only complaint about the cabin was that there was a lot of blank wall space that made the cabin feel less than cozy. The food in the main dining room was always top notch and again, there were always options for our dietary restrictions. The wait staff were always friendly and attentive. We never waited long periods between courses as on our previous experience on a larger ship. The food was so good, that we never felt the need to try either of the specialty restaurants, especially given the price of $50 per person. Additionally, even as big cocktail drinkers, we were quite happy with the included alcohols that we never really thought about upgrading. The house wines provided at meals were always excellent, with a multiple choices for reds and whites, and always a rosé and a sparkling wine. The entertainment was a surprise. I don't think of myself as a "show" person, but the shows put on by the entertainers were well worth watching. I wish I had the chance to see more. But there were always multiple entertainment options to choose from at any given time, which is a great problem to have! The cruise director and assistant crew director were always available and willing to spend time with the passengers. On such a small ship, they got to know us as individuals. Additionally, members of the LBGTQ+ Community are valued here and treated with respect. My husband of 21 years and I danced together in public for the very first time at the White Party toward the end of the cruise. If you are considering taking an Azamara cruise, this is not a venue for children. There are no children's activities, nor venues for them. While this is not an adults only line, you'd be hard pressed to keep your kids entertained. We only did one ship excursion, as were not overly impressed. This is was in Casablanca. But, I think it was more the location than Azamara's fault. Even those who did private tours there had complaints about the level of service. We fell in love with Azamara and booked another cruise with them while onboard...on the same ship...in the same cabin! That should be a testament to how much we enjoyed this cruise.

Wonderful itinerary, crew is amazing, cabin was great, white night was fabulous as always and the Azamazing evening was first class. We were particularly impressed with our captain and the head of hotel (Elizabeth). Just a couple of "misses" or areas of improvement: 1. some of the shore excursions were wonderful and others not so much especially the Positano/Capri on your own - don't do 2 in one day. We spent the majority of the time waiting in lines for boats to take us to the two ports and only had an hour in each!!! 2. change up the menus in Prime C and Aqualina - they've been the same for years. The food is great but when you eat there multiple times the menu gets old. But the rest of the cruise is just the best!!! We can't say enough about the quality of the ship and crew! From the moment we arrived for embarkation until we departed the entire crew made us feel very special.
