Ship Reviews

We were on the second trip ever for the AmaMagdalena; it had made the trip from Cartagena to Barranquilla and we were on the return voyage. It was a fantastic experience and given the newness of everything (ship, staff, shore excursions etc.) it was amazing. We could not have asked for more. Ship capacity is 60, very small for a river cruise, but that size fit in nicely on a route that had not seen ships even that size for decades (they told us the last time Mompox had seen a ship that size was in 1961, when the Magdalena was still a primary access and trade route to the uplands of Colombia. The small towns we visited were all interesting, and the inhabitants were thrilled to see us, often turning out in large numbers including music and dancers to serenade us as we disembarked. AMA had done an amazing job in working with (and supporting) the small communities along the Magdalena, including building new docks for each town (only two of which had been installed by our visit so at the others we took smaller tenders ashore). The ship itself was compact, the rooms were smallish but nice. The food was plentiful, varied, and quite good. One benefit of a smaller ship is that you see the same people regularly and thus are more apt to develop friendships. This is an excellent trip for those who are looking for someting a little adventuresome. We had a group of 10, all with previous river cruise experiences, and we all thought this was one of our best trips ever.

I loved this itinerary, completely unique, interesting and adventurous. From the stilt house tour to the dancers and the filigree experience every day was a new experience. There were a lot of hands on demonstrations for the excursions . There was also an extraordinary birdwatching tour. I enjoyed all of the tours I was able to go on. The staff on the ship are local to the area and their pride in the land and the culture is infectious. The locals we met along the way were joyful and gracious. I have never enjoyed so many delicious fruit drinks! The staff gave their all at every turn. My husband is gluten free and they had a bread for him at every meal. We had a medical episode near the end of the cruise which would have been difficult were it not for the expert service of the crew. I am in awe of all that was done to help us. We were never alone through the entire ordeal. I could name names but in the end literally every staff member would be on the list. A scary event was made bearable, we felt well cared for. The ship’s crew deserve accolades for sure! Beyond that, folks at the two hospitals, the ambulance crew, literally everyone was kind and sympathetic. Under the circumstances I could not have asked for more.

New ship- Amamagdelana sailing on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Like all new startups it has some growing pains. But all the staff is trying hard to make the cruise a success. Wanted to post some pictures as it seems like no one has submitted any yet. So far the trip is great. Everything still has a brand new feel to it. Most of the staff is still getting used to being in the service industry. There always seems to be some confusion at the start of the day, but eventually it works out fine and by lunch everything is running smooth. Food is very nice, but more like river cruise cuisine. Still early in the trip and hoping for some more regional dishes. Most of the excursions are starting out early to finish before lunch to beat the Colombian heat in the afternoon. It seems like a very successful launch of a new river to cruise. Very happy with the trip so far.

Overall, it was the most enriching and memorable river cruise I have taken. I applaud the extra efforts of the co founder of AmaWaterways to have involved the local communities so actively in creating this pioneer river cruise in Colombia by using the local products, such the handcrafted furniture and accessories, giving the new and inexperienced local guides in the villages a chance to become a competent tourist guides in the future and enlisting local retired knowledgeable people as the local guides , supporting the local businesses and providing us the tourists the first hand experiences to interact with local villagers, some of whom had never had contact with foreigners during our off shore excursions. With the help of three fluent English speaking experienced and competent crew members served as our river guides/translators during those visits, we came away with being much more knowledgeable and informed about the local cultures (the Cumbia dance performance and the mini Carnival specially arranged for our enjoyment), the wildlife (iguanas, the howling monkeys, the sloths and all kinds of birds) and the history (the history of the black village in San Basilio of Palenque) of this beautiful country. The foods on the ship was fabulous in terms of quality and quantity with local and Western cuisines available for guests to choose from. The executive chef was very approachable and open to make sure we got what we wanted. The crew members worked very hard to do their best although communicating with some of them was quite difficult due to their limited English language skills. But they made it up with attentive services and personable approach. On the down side, the gratuities system seemed to be more complex than we had expected. There was room for improvement at the front desk although the gentleman was very friendly. I was promised to receive a final statement at the night before the morning disembarkment on the next day but I never received it, leaving me wonder if I still have anything outstanding on my final bill.
