Ship Reviews

The service was extra special! The staff truly wanted you to have the time of your life, and they succeeded! The food was delicious, every meal! Every day was planned out meticulously, everything needed was provided, and then some! I can't say enough about henrique bastos, our cruise manager. He was "johnny on the spot" every day, in all ways! He was ever present, updating, helping, explaining, working morning, day, and night to ensure that we had a perfect trip! He did it!!! Kudos to henrique! When i think of him i see the epitome of ama! He is a treasure to behold, never tiring, always available, always with a great personality! Nicky was fun and attentive in the lounge. The asian staff in the restaurant were great to see every day. Always cracking jokes and laughing. You need to staff the pool bar. All the bottles are sitting there, but no bartender.

We had a full balcony BB level room. It was very pretty and well designed so that there was enough room for belongings. (We put our empty suitcases under the bed). If you've stayed in New York City hotels, you'll be familiar with the efficient, no space wasted design. The staff were superb. We also stayed two days pre-cruise as part of our package. For that, we were in the Dam square area at the posh Grand hotel Krasnspolsky where we also found the staff to be extremely helpful and gracious. The food on board was consistently excellent, with minor missteps (a wellness bowl of chocolate pudding and fruit seemed a bit rich for our breakfast but was tasty). The chef's dinner was superlative, and perfectly plated. Excursions were well done and local guides were interesting and informative. We lucked out and got sunshine for our entire cruise but complimentary umbrellas were available in our rooms if the weather failed.

Impressive!! This was my first river cruise of any kind, and I was lucky to start with AMA waterways. I had the ""lowest" level room but hey the porthole/window was at least three feet above the waterline and not partially submerged as I had been led to believe. If the passengers were 150 in total I'd say 100 in my age range, 65+, with the remainder in the 50+ age bracket. No children's activities so I was surprised to see at least four in the under 12 age but then you can't always get a sitter. The kids were not a problem. I was cruising solo but got ""adopted"" by 3 Boston area cruisers who had sailed with AMA before and that made the daily excursions and lunch and dinner more fun. Food was personalized off your menu and each of many many courses was great, if small, and I didn't leave hungry. I like the low key breakfast buffet and still the servers came by to offer more custom items from a menu. Great food to prepare you for each day's excursion. I had seen a Rick Steves Xmas markets episode, so I picked this cruise and these dates to see each port's/town's Xmas market and I was not disappointed. Gluhwein (hot wine), bakery stands and any kind of Xmas decoration or ornament that you would desire were on display in each town. Markets are packed as they are there not just for isolated tourists, but the region comes to markets as well. Not "free beer and pizza" crowded but you won't be alone. You can navigate the crowds so don't let them put you off. This is my attempt at ""tips"" Perhaps all boats do this but embarkation day was anticlimactic as we stayed moored in Amsterdam Thursday night. I intentionally arrived early to allow for airline issues SO if you wanted to arrive the day of embarkation you would have until late in the evening and still not miss your cruise. Friday was a nice trip on local boats through the canals of Amsterdam and we left the dock, I think, around 2:00PM so in a worst case scenario you could still enjoy the rest of the cruise if your flights were late.

We chose the Rhine river cruise with AMA for the castle viewing and the active shore excursions. Every activity was perfectly curated. The smaller group size, only 130 on board our sailing, made for manageable excursions in small groups. Every location had charm and many activities that interested us. We got lucky and had perfect sailing weather the morning of castle viewing as we sailed by. Bar staff brought around Rudesheim coffee for us to enjoy as the cruise director narrated the history of the castles. Now for the bad, tons of sick people. It’s an open world post-pandemic. Illness was rampant on board as all dining is one seating all in a crowded and low ceiling room with no fresh ventilation. The same applies to shore talks and cocktail hour. We started skipping cocktail hour, but couldn’t skip meals. Hardly any tables for two, but that likely mattered little by then. We spent much time on our shore free time tracking down pharmacies and getting prescriptions filled. FYI the service Mobi-Doc offers English speaking EU doctors who will email you a prescription. Then you have to find a pharmacy with your meds in stock (Augmentin for an ear infection was VERY hard to find in France). In Switzerland you must see a Swiss doctor. They will not accept Mobi-Doc scripts. All in all, a fantastic cruise, but disappointing to be sick several days of a very expensive and much anticipated vacation. We had to downgrade from hikes and biking to walking tours to conserve energy. I’d do it again with AMA for the Danube, but in a few years when the world is (hopefully) healthier.

Enrichment

We realize that our guests have different tastes, so we’ve developed a diverse menu of included shore excursions to accommodate all travelers with a personalized experience in every port of call. In many destinations, you’ll be free to choose from one of several tours — all of which are included in your cruise fare. There’s always a city tour designed to show you the renowned highlights and landmarks in grand capitals and charming villages alike. Is it your first time in Vienna, Austria? Opt for an unforgettable exploration of the major sights led by a local, English-speaking guide that is well-versed in history and culture. Have you already been to Nuremberg, Germany? Instead of taking the city tour, indulge in a bratwurst and beer tasting on one of our immersive culinary-themed special interest tours, which are specially designed to place you in the midst of local life. We also offer different activity levels for gentle, regular and active walkers, as well as guided hiking and biking tours. The choice is yours.

We appreciate that no two travellers are alike. To accommodate your unique needs and interests, we have curated a diverse menu of shore excursions. From historic city tours to guided hikes, exhilarating bike rides and tastings of local specialties, every tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide, is operated in a small group and is offered with our compliments.

Explore Europe’s amazing sights like the locals do. We were the first river cruise line to carry an entire fleet of complimentary bicycles on board, so you can experience biking alongside enchanting riverside pathways and in city centers. Whether you feel like joining one of our exclusive guided bike tours, or want to go discover on your own, there are many ways for you to explore on two wheels during your cruise. The beauty of Europe doesn’t just lie in its architecture and landmarks – there are also breathtaking sights to be seen when you venture out into nature. That’s why we’ve designed special guided hikes that will take you a bit off the beaten path, offering a unique perspective in beautiful destinations such as Austria’s UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley. All of our guided hikes and bike tours are included in the cruise fare so you have more choices when it comes to how you prefer to explore.

Entertainment

Part of the draw of traveling to new destinations is immersing yourself in authentic local culture. We are happy to bring evening entertainment on board that includes musicians, folkloric dancers and storytellers who live and work in the cities we sail to and are happy to share their cultural traditions and talents with you. Whether it’s traditional Bavarian music, a local quartet or contemporary piano favourites played by our resident musician, you will enjoy an eclectic schedule of onboard entertainment every night.

With fewer guests on board, you can enjoy the luxury of space to unwind, relax and reconnect with your loved ones. Our public areas, including lounges and restaurants, are never overcrowded.

You can also take a dip in our sun-deck pool with a swim-up bar. On any of our ships, you can also recharge from the comfort of your stateroom by watching a Hollywood blockbuster or a variety of other English-language programming on your personal Entertainment-On-Demand system.
