AmaVida

Timeless elegance spills from the decks of AmaVida as the ship cruises along Portugal and Spain’s Douro River. Rust and gold color schemes bring together the Douro’s breathtaking sunsets and a sepia hue that conjures timeworn snapshots of the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Most staterooms feature balconies from which to enjoy views of terraced vineyards, as well as Entertainment-On-Demand, climate-controlled air conditioning and an in-room safe. AmaVida’s passionate chefs will treat you to exquisite, locally-sourced cuisine paired with unlimited local wine—and the region’s signature Port—as well as beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner in the Main Restaurant cada noche.

Ship Reviews

The staff was wonderful and the cruise director Mariana is amazing. Service was excellent and personable. The entertainment in the evening was definitely lacking! The piano player after dinner put us to sleep. There was no life. When I asked if he could play more lively music I was told “this is what they want me to play”! No wonder no one stayed up in the lounge! The TV had minimal movies, not much of a selection!! If I was sick and had to stay in my cabin, there would be not enough entertainment. The first drop off in Porto was not a good area. It was dreary/dirty and nothing of interest. The 2nd drop off the next day was a good area with much to see and I would much rather have had 2 visits in that area. Tipping- the suggested tip for the cruise director I do not agree with. Yes, she was amazing and I was happy to tip her, however, that is her job. I feel you should pay her enough so you don’t suggest a tip. Again, all the staff is wonderful.

Absolutely fantastic time exploring Porto Portugal, Madrid Spain and the surrounding areas by both boat on the Duro river and by land with Ama sponsored tours! I was overwhelmed with the hospitality of the AmaVida staff and crew as well as our tour guides each day we went on an excursion! I highly recommend this river cruise for everyone! Our cabin with a small balcony was awesome! The room amenities were plentiful for a river boat. The food and the wine was absolutely the best (I gained 10 lbs) and the on land activities were not only entertaining but educational! I enjoyed our river cruise so much that I put a deposit down for two (2) to book a future river cruise and save some money as well! I just can't say enough about the crew, our staff and our cruise director. All of these folks just made the trip so enjoyable!!

This was our first river cruise, and we discovered an experience very different from our ocean cruises. This cruise was much more intimate. The scenery we watched every day was extraordinary with every hillside covered completely with the beautiful greenery of vineyards and forests. There was virtually no industrial development, and the peacefulness of the environment provided a welcome break from urban life. We had only about 80 passengers, which allowed us to meet and make friends with everyone. Sharing activities enhanced every moment. The food was delicious and the crew's attentive service was a special treat. We want to give particular thnaks to Louis, the Cruise Manager, who shepherded and educated us at every step along the route, both on land in Lisbon and Madrid and on the Douro route. Our appreciation also goes to Ana for overseeing every aspect of our ship life and very capably resolving some initial challenges.

This was our first time on a river cruise. The crew of the boat is as good as it gets. Very helpful very informative. I cannot say enough good about all of them. The Breakfast & Lunch buffets were top-of-the-line with many choices, something for everyone! I thought the dinners were a little too esoteric for my taste. There was a lot of seafood in these dinners and I don’t care for seafood. The tour itineraries that came along with the trip were also really great. All but one of the tour guides had great personalities with lots of information, and even humor. Only one of the guides (which I think was not with AMA) was nearly impossible for us to understand(Leticia). This was the consensus of our entire group of 8. The only thing I felt should be changed was that we could have spent one or two more nights at Porto and far less at the Spanish border. There is nothing there and we spent two nights! Cruising on the River in the daytime was a big plus!
