Ship Reviews

We have just returned from a Med cruise on Azura and we loved it. Gorgeous ship, friendly staff and fabulous food . It has had a refurb of public rooms but cabins were a bit dated- no problem though - they were spotlessly clean. . Mixture of ages but attention was given to providing something and somewhere for everyone.. Shows were especially stunning and packed every night. Great ports, though Rome, Puglia, Sicily and Livorno were big container ports and the excursions weren’t all that great. Loved Corfu, Cephalonia, and Corsica. Valetta is unique and stunning. We are planning another cruise on Azura but this time Miss out Italy and her huge ports. We were in a balcony cabin on B deck - ,we may choose C or D deck next time for a bit more space. This was our 10th cruise - 8 with P&O . I do miss lovely little Oceana though . - my first love!

Thursday, 24th July 2025 Travel day! Up at 2:30am (ugh!) for our drive to Manchester Airport T2 for our TUI flight to Malta. Dropped the car at T2 Meet & Greet and then checked in the car key in the terminal. Queued up to check in at the dedicated P&O Cruise desks for flight TOM 2440 departing at 06:10 am. Through security west using the new scanners so electronic items did not need to be removed from our bags. Collected our traditional bottle of champagne for sail away. Once through headed to Apiary for breakfast. £47 for 2 juices, 1 coffee, 1 tea, Eggs Benedict and a full English! Shortly afterwards headed to gate A1 to board our plane, a TUI Boeing 737-800. A slight delay to take off due to the volume of traffic but soon airborne en route to Valletta, Malta. Exit row seats 15A & 15B with plenty of leg room but seats not that comfortable. £7 for 2 cappuccinos which were a bit yuk to be honest. I watched a film, ‘The Amateur’ on my iPad starring Remi Malek and Laurence Fishburne to pass the time. Listened to a bit of music, again to pass the time and started this journal! After landing in Malta, we made our way to passport control and out of the airport. As we were flying with TUI our luggage was ‘bonded’ which meant we didn’t have to collect it as it would be sent directly to the ship and would be delivered to our stateroom. We followed the many signs for P&O cruises and boarded a bus to take us to the ship. We entered the unique check in area (like a cave) and were quickly checked in, our boarding pass stamped ‘ok to board’, security photos taken and headed to the ship. Boy was it hot! We needed the cool of the ship. But first we headed to our muster station (Playhouse Theatre) to check in. We then needed to watch the safety briefing on our tv in the cabin. Headed to the buffet for a cooling beer and lunch. An announcement was made to advise cabins would be available around 2:30pm. After lunch and around 2:15 pm we headed to our cabin and found our bags in the hallway on our way to stateroom (Riviera deck 14, starboard side, forward). After unpacking we relaxed after such an early start this morning. Bit concerned that the air con is not working that well in our cabin. Getting ready for dinner and headed to the Blue Bar for pre dinner cocktails. We used the My Holiday planner to join the virtual queue for a table for 2 for dinner. We ate dinner in the Peninsular dining room and chose the special selection menu for an additional charge of £16.95 pp as we have onboard spend to use. After dinner we headed to the top deck to watch the sail away from Valletta which was all lit up at 10pm. 1 more drink in Malabar and off to bed after such an early start from home in Manchester! Friday, 25th July. A day at sea. After a hot and restless night due to ineffective air conditioning, woke at around 6:30am. I showered and headed to reception to report the issue to see what can be done. Waiting for maintenance to check it and they sent a message to deck manager for a solution. I walked around deck 7 and then headed back to our cabin. We headed to the Peninsular restaurant (deck 6) for breakfast using the virtual queue and then to Java Cafe for a Costa coffee. That needs an extra shot! Back to the cabin to find the stateroom attendant hadn’t made up our cabin as yet. So, I updated this journal! Then I decided to start distributing our HighSeasEscapades fridge magnets (well the first hundred!). Started on deck 14 and worked my way down to deck 5 (no cabins on 6&7) placing the magnets on cabin doors at random. Headed up to deck 18 and The Planet Bar to enjoy the chill of the air conditioning in there! Back to the cabin and then it’s soon time for lunch! Went off to The Glass House and ordered the sliders (1 chicken, 1 lamb and 1 beef brisket). Very nice for £7.25, washed down with a pint of Moreti. Back to the cabin and maintenance delivered a table fan which is going to help with the heat and lack of decent air conditioning. Then decided on a walk to film deck 7 promenade with the Insta360 camera. Looks like 1 lap (well you can’t get all the way around) is 1 mile. Then filming inside of the Glass House, Blue Bar, Malabar, Sindhu, Photo Gallery and The Manhattan Room. Got two Mango and Passion fruit coolers from Java, then headed to the gym which as this is a sea day, was very busy. Tonight is celebration night so dressed in our tuxedos off to Blue Bar for pre dinner cocktails. At 7:30 pm arrangements were being made for the captain’s welcome so the area got very busy so we headed to the Planet Bar, deck 18 as it is above the Epicurean where we were dining. Quiet in Planet Bar as most people were in the Atrium for the captain. Headed to Epicurean for a fantastic dinner! Back to the Blue Bar afterwards. The barman insisted we took a bottle of Chardonnay back to the room (basically just charged us 3 large glasses as we have the deluxe drinks package). Saturday, 26th July - Kotor, Montenegro Up early to witness the spectacular sail into Kotor. Early breakfast as we have a tour at 9:15am, but as this is a tender port, we have to be sent by boat to the centre of Kotor and need to meet in the Playhouse theatre at 8:45 am. We board the tender boat on deck 4 and it’s a 20 min journey to Kotor. On arrival we get an earbud connected to a receiver so we can hear the guide. Then another boat for 45 mins passing Azura to The Lady of the Lake church alone on an island in Boka Bay opposite Perast. Boy is it hot! Then back on the boat to be dropped in Perast to visit the museum or wander around. We chose to wander around and had a cold beer at a waterfront restaurant. At 12:30 we boarded again and headed back to Kotor, passing Azura again on the way. At the end of the tour we entered the city through the gate in the city walls. It was so hot we sheltered in shops for the air con! It’s a small town and in 30 minutes we reached the end of the old town and headed back for a tender to the ship. A large queue had formed and we had to shuffle along in the baking heat for 45 mins for a tender back to the ship and the welcomed air con! Now 2:50pm we headed smartly to the buffet for a late lunch time salad and another welcoming cold beer before it closed at 3pm. Back in the cabin to rest! Tried calling mum, but the calls kept failing despite having a 5G connection. Quite frustrating really. Managed using Teams and the old Skype. Pre dinner cocktails in the Blue Bar and dinner in Peninsular dining room. Chatted to a lady and her daughter for most of the meal which was very enjoyable. Then off to the silent disco on decks 15 & 16. Good fun and caught up with Lorraine and her friend Tracy. Sunday, 27th July – Dubrovnik, Croatia Another early start as our tour started at 9am. However, at least no tender needed so we had breakfast in Peninsular and headed out to find our bus. Not as humid and hot as yesterday so that made it a bit more comfortable. On coach 17 and soon we were off to Cavtat. Our guide advised that there is now a limit of only 3 cruise ships allowed in port on a daily basis. We were joined by Viking Sea today. He gave us commentary en route and then led us to the waterfront of this quaint town and left us to meander. Fridge magnets purchased. Back on the bus to head to Dubrovnik. On reaching the old city it looked busy! There is one entrance which has a one-way system in place for pedestrians! The streets are packed! We wandered around and purchased a Hard Rock beer glass for our friend who collects them, and whose birthday it is today and he was in the Hard Rock Edinburgh! A couple of beers later (€16) and then back to the bus at 12:45. Thousands of tourists milling about but we tracked down the bus and soon back to the ship. Lunch today in the Glass House again. Fish and chips was huge! Dinner tonight in Sindhu which costs extra and is priced al la carté, but the deposit of £10pp paid online when booking in advance is deducted from the final bill. Leaving Dubrovnik, next stop Corfu. Lose an hour tonight as clocks need to go forward Monday, 28th July – Corfu, Greece Lost an hour last night as clocks went forward as we were arriving in Greece. Docked in Corfu just after 8am. Our tour was due at 10:00 am so we headed off to breakfast in the Peninsular dining room. Eggs Benedict for me for a change. Back to the cabin to gather our belongings and ashore to bus 16 for our scenic Corfu tour. Our tour guide provided a lot of information about our drive into Corfu town, but I wouldn’t call it scenic! Afterwards, we had a bit of a walking tour before being left to our own devices for 90 minutes. We had a frozen coffee and what a palaver paying. In Montenegro and Croatia, not an issue using contactless to pay. Waited ages for the bill, only couldn’t read it as print out was shocking. Oh no, not in Corfu, huffing and puffing, must get the card machine, plug it into power it up, login and then tried to charge me €25 for 2 coffees when it actually was €11. Wandered around for a while and then decided to have a beer on our way back to the bus. Another try at paying by card but was told it didn’t work. Another customer was going to give me €2 as I only had €11 in cash. But then by a miracle the card machine worked! Seems to me that in Greece, despite moves in other countries thanks to Covid to use contactless payments, they still want cash, I wonder why? Anyway, back to the ship and we had lunch in the buffet and I tried a cheeseburger from the poolside grill. Dinner with a great view in the Peninsular dining room and drinks afterwards around the ship. Tuesday, 29th July – Taranto, Italy Clocks went back an hour again last night, so we gained a hour. Arrived at Taranto, Italy and after breakfast headed off for our trip to Ostuni, a pretty whitewashed hillside town about 45 mins away. After a guided walk we had free time to purchase souvenirs and head back to the ship. We had lunch again in the Glass House having 3 tapas dishes each for £10.50pp. Afterwards spent the afternoon delivering fridge magnets and taking photos of venues around the ship. We also received our ‘charter pack’ with details of our return flight on Thursday from Malta. Included baggage tags and boarding passes! Another Black Tie evening which we were not taking part in so we were not allowed to visit either of our most frequented bars, The Planet and Blue Bars. We were restricted to Malabar, Brodies or the Glass House. We ate in the Beach House tonight. What a meal for such a small supplement. Sharing nachos, 10oz filet steak cooking on a lava rock with tiger prawns and cajun fries. Dessert was a huge piece of apple pie and a banana split, couldn’t move! After dinner we went to Brodies and spent some time in the casino. 50% profit so cashed that out. I think due to the heavy meal we headed back to the cabin. As we were going to bed Patrick realised, he’d left his phone somewhere. Most likely at the cashier's desk in the casino as he put it down to sign a receipt for his winnings. This could be a major disaster. So, off he rushed to the casino who told him a phone had been passed to reception. Very luckily it was his and he returned with it in hand. Phew

This was our first cruise and we weren’t disappointed. Everything from check in at the airport to getting through cruise check in was faultless. Our cabin was ready when we arrived. We had a balcony cabin, at the back of the ship, on Riviera deck. No issues with noise from the buffet upstairs. The only noise was from people using the outside door to get to the Terrace pool. Cabin steward was great and cheerful. Freedom dining was fine, we used the buffet on the first night and occasionally at lunchtime but preferred the Peninsula restaurant. We did a couple of specialist dining sittings, which were lovely. We tended to use the Oasis pool, which was adults only as it was very quiet. Entertainment was ok, and there was something for everyone, we found the acts on our 2nd week better than week 1. It’s worth doing research to the ports to see which ones you can easily do yourself. Disembarking was well organised and efficient. Malta airport was very busy once you are through security.
